The Assembleia Legislativa is the legislative body that operates at the state level in Brazil. Its main function is to legislate on matters of state competence and oversee the activities of the executive branch at the state level, in addition to creating, altering, or revoking state laws. Its structure and function are similar to that of the National Congress and its members, called state deputies, are elected by the population for a term of four years. The number of deputies varies depending on the population of each state.
