My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD. She struggles everyday to live in a world not built for her. As parents we do everything we can from working with her on medication to sending her to therapy. Her 504 plan does not seem like much on paper, but something as simple as permitting her to wear chewlry helps her to focus and not disrupt classroom learning. From the simple to the complex, 504 plans allow kids to be a part of the classroom while also giving teachers a resource to reach kids who are struggling.
Both of my sons have some form of color blindness, and having processes in place to ensure that my kids will be able to learn to the same level that all other students are able to is crucial.
Not only am a teacher with students who need accommodations such as speech to text, through 504s but I have hearing loss and benefit from accommodation such as having lectures recorded, having presenters use a mic that connects to my hearing aids, and having seating close to the speaker so I can lip read.
My father was a polio survivor who lived in the times there were no protections. He succeeded by sheer grit and will but made it his life’s mission to speak for the disabled. I sign this petition with the respect of my father, Bill Israel.
Individuals with disabilities benefit from section 504, making it clear what disability discrimination is as well as making sure individuals with disabilities are able to equally and fairly access their communities and the world around them.
Involvement in this suit is asking the court to eliminate Section 504 rules and the entire law. If the court does this, many of the students I support and work with will not be able to get equal treatment or access the supports they need. Section 504 is necessary and supports people with disabilities; we should be in support of this law rather than attacking the rights of people with disabilities.
I am a Special Education teacher and I have seen the struggles and heartache a family can go through. We need t continue to support all families with children who have disabilities. Their medical and equipment needs are financially bankrupting. They need us.
My son has adhd/dmdd and with his IEP he has been able to be successful in the classroom with the help of those resources. We would be doing a disservice to our children by removing these resources.
My daughter has a learning disability. Without 504 accommodations she would not be where she is today. 20% of the population is dyslexic and need protections under 504. WV is estimated 40% are dyslexic. Please please stop this lawsuit. 🙏🏻
