These programs are vital to the success of my kids and so many kids in this state. I promise you the money that is allocated for these programs is being used and more than ever, kids and parents are pushing for these programs because education/ college is so expensive! Even in state tuition is very hard for so many families to pay for. Programs like GATE, mental health and concurrent enrollment nurture and aid these families in making it possible for their kids to get an education in this expensive state. Don’t take away the best chance so many families have of making their kids’ future possible! A future in our home state and in our own communities.
I took concurrent enrollment and it helped me so much. Where I wouldn’t have been able to pay for these classes, the school helped fund them. Because of this I was able to take classes for college and better know what I want my major to be. In addition the dual immersion program is extremely valuable to us, especially in elementary school. Lastly any mental health support shouldn’t even be considered as something to get rid of. Whether 1 or 100 students are using this resource, it is needed and it is helpful. Anyone that struggles with mental health or knows someone that struggles with it should know that this cannot be taken away from our schools.
I have kids currently in Davis Enhanced Education Programs (DEEP), or what my gen called GATE. These specialized classes have allowed my kids to thrive and learn at a pace befitting their aptitude. Many of their classmates (including my kids) have special needs and considerations that require teachers with specialized training to handle. Without the availability of these specialized classes and teachers, I’d likely have to homeschool my kids to meet their needs.
DLI programs should be considered an essential part of our schools. Young learners who haven't had a chance to learn English before entering the public school system deserve as much of a chance to learn and be understood in school as our native English speaking students. I had the opportunity to work as a paraprofessional in a Spanish dual immersion and saw how the Spanish speaking students struggled to communicate their needs unless they were surrounded by Spanish. Not to mention the advantage every child has when they learn two languages at such a young age. To be bilingual gives them opportunities later in life. Our goal should be to give all children opportunities to learn and grow in every capacity and never take away their opportunities.
As someone who personally benefited from the concurrent enrollment program (many years ago), I know first-hand how valuable these educational opportunities can be. I graduated high school with nearly two semesters of college credits, which fast-tracked my career and saved my family significant money.
Now, as a parent, both of my sons are thriving in the dual immersion program, which is helping them learn a second language, understand different cultures, and connect with their peers in meaningful ways. The challenges they face in learning a new language are pushing them to grow, and the exposure to teachers from different countries has broadened their worldview. Additionally, both of them have participated in the GATE program, bringing home new knowledge and experiences that inspire their love of learning. Eliminating these programs would be a huge setback for our children and their futures. These programs are critical to providing our kids with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed in an ever changing world.
My daughter just started going to an accelerated academic program this year. Previously she was in a regular classroom where she wasn't challenged. She tested past her grades at the beginning of the year and wasn't allowed to skip grades. Her teachers didn't have the time or resources to help her in school so she literally spent her first two years of elementary doing nothing and learning nothing. The accelerated program has been valuable to her. She has learned so much and is finally challenged in school. This bill cannot be passed because it would disadvantage gifted kids like my daughter. We should be bringing out the best in our brightest kids rather than leaving them bored in school where we can't foster their academic growth. Please vote against this bill!
All of my twice exceptional children have benefited greatly from several of these programs. Sometimes to the tune of literally saving their lives. Please stop cutting funding to our kids! They need you!
A child of mine is currently enrolled in a GATE program and it has been the perfect fit and such a big blessing. A regular elementary school classroom would never have been challenging enough for him. Instead, he’s been able to be in a class with kids his same age while learning material 1-3 grade levels advanced. It’s been such a blessing! As a teenager, I took A LOT of concurrent enrollment classes and it was one of the best decisions I made in High School. I’m so grateful that my high school was able to offer so many college classes to me and my peers. I graduated with more than 40 credits! Please keep these programs around that help bring about and encourage excellence in our students. They are our future and we should give them the programs to stretch themselves and take on advanced classes.
