As an alum of UM now working in DEI at a peer institution, I am concerned about our government's attacks on higher education and on diversity, inclusion, and equity efforts. This is the time to be transparent and to stand up for the most marginalized and affected voices in the community. It is the time to double down on DEI. I am aware that threats of removing crucial funding needed for universities to run is causing these institutions to move their DEI efforts to differently-named but similar offices that still do the important work. In order to do this correctly, though, universities must be transparent, and they must assure their communities that they stand with them. Private universities, in particular, do not face as many restrictions as public government-run institutions, so they must exercise their freedoms of assembly, petition, and speech and use their voices to support the people who need them. When a university is opaque about its actions, especially after deleting crucial resources, the community has a hard time gauging the institution's intentions, and they are negatively impacted by the confusion and loss that ensues. This is combined with fear that the university may be walking back on its support of the communities. This is not the time for the university to be opaque, and it is certainly not the time for the university to walk back on its commitments to its community. I hope the university is transparent about its intentions and its reasoning for its actions, and I hope it quickly restores the lost information that the community needs.
As an alumnus of the University of Miami, I am deeply disappointed by the recent removal of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) materials and the administration’s lack of transparency in this decision. DEI initiatives are not merely symbolic gestures—they are essential to fostering an environment where all students, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, feel valued, supported, and equipped to thrive academically and personally.
Eliminating DEI efforts not only undermines the well-being of minority students but also weakens the university’s commitment to academic excellence and global competitiveness. Research consistently demonstrates that diverse and inclusive environments lead to stronger critical thinking, higher innovation, and better overall institutional performance. If the University of Miami aspires to rise in national and global rankings, it should prioritize the needs of its students, faculty, and staff over costly and ineffective expansion projects that do little to enhance the core academic mission.
A university is only as strong as the community it serves. History has shown that leadership that disregards the voices of its students, faculty, and staff ultimately fails. I urge the administration to reconsider this decision and recommit to fostering a truly inclusive and supportive academic environment.

Removing DEI initiatives sends a negative message to all students and staff that our community will not protect and support its most vulnerable members.
Protecting DEI initiatives is protecting the future of UM. What would Miami be without diversity? Diversity, equity, and inclusion should not have to be things that need to be fought for on a systematic level. It should be ingrained in society to promote fairness, kindness, and empathy. Removing even access to resources is not fair, kind, and does not consider the needs of others.
Not happy to see the university I recently graduated from pulling back on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. In a city as culturally rich as Miami, they should be celebrating their diversity, not silencing it. I’m proud of the students there today demanding and protesting against their compliance with a federal effort to stand complicit in systemic discrimination.
I’m a queer double-cane (undergrad and masters) and don’t think I wouldn’t have been terrified and looking for somewhere to transfer to had this happened while I was a student.
As a recent alumni of the U, I am horrified to see them walking back their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Now is not the time for academic institutions to comply with a federal effort that attempts to silence and erase the experience and realities of systemic discrimination. Much love to all the student organizations who were not afraid to make noise during this important moment.
As a Chair and professor at the University of Miami, I am, and continue to be, committed to amplify ALL voices in our community. A University cannot fulfill its core mission if ANY voices are silenced.
