I’ve lived on this dangerous corner for 45 years and witnessed many accidents involving pedestrians, including small children and infants in strollers caught under cars. The traffic police do the best they can to control drivers but it doesn’t seem to help. It’s time to put some real protections in place that would prevent further accidents and pedestrian fatalities. A firm four way stop for vehicular traffic perhaps. Also cameras and enforcement of cameras.
Crossed this intersection to go to work daily for six years. Was almost hit many times. I warned anyone who ever visited that cars will not stop when pedestrians have right of way. Ive never seen any car stopped or ticketed, despite constant traffic violations including running red lights, aggressive acceleration into the intersection, and disregard for right-of-way.
I have to cross york Ave then 63rd st everyday with two boys 8 and 4 after school after getting off the M31 bus. It is very scary with cars turning and speeding through the light!! They do not give us the right of way even with the traffic police. Please help! I’m afraid that we will be run down, injured or killed.
I have lived at this intersection since 2019 and have almost been hit by a car while pushing my baby in a stroller.
I am also aware that at least one pedestrian was killed at this intersection.
Lastly, it’s well-known that the city has a deal with the construction company DiFasio, which enables them to rip up the streets and rebuild as they see fit to keep pedestrians from crossing York directly. The least they could do is enforce the current traffic laws, which force residents to cross the on-ramp to cross York Ave.
Change is not only needed, it is well overdue.
