Sadly, the citation scares many people into paying the fine. However, I've had to point out to folks that the 'affidavit of non-responsibility' on the back is there because the violation cannot be enforced. I've gotten traffic camera tickets in 4 Washington cities (and never for going more than 10 mph over) and haven't paid any of them - just filled out the back and sent it in. I guess my monetary penalty was the cost of the stamp. Some cities also ask you to name the driver but don't fall for that either. This is simply a tax on people they can trick into paying.
I'm so glad someone is taking the charge on this. Purely on principle, I do not agree with traffic cameras. I've said for years they are a money grab by cities to increase revenue. They serve no safety purpose. The one in Hedden accomplishes nothing other than catching people as they're already slowing to a stop at the four-way stop sign. Also: what's to say that my car wasn't stolen and someone ran the red. I'm now on the line for a traffic infraction? So much for innocent until proven guilty.
Money collected so far should go towards sidewalks across the street from Northwood Elementary, many children walk to school from those side streets. Additionally, they should install a lighted crosswalk along 24th so kids can cross safely.
