Petition updateSTOP TRAFFIC CAMERA PHOTO ENFORCEMENT IN EDGEWOODUpdate on the Edgewood School Zone Camera Petition

Thank you again for signing the petition asking the City of Edgewood to end the school-zone photo enforcement program and remove the cameras.

I have been busy with my summertime business and summer classes so I haven't had a lot of time to keep up with the updates.

The city held a study session on August 19 which was very revealing.

At the August 19 study session, the Mayor and Council discussed the petition — but they never addressed any of the specific issues raised by residents and me during more than a dozen public meetings. None of the following points were discussed:

Whether the cameras were being used in compliance with city ordinance;
Whether camera revenues were used properly under state and local law;
Or whether the program served any genuine safety purpose.

Instead, the discussion focused on general opinions, national safety statistics, and hypothetical liability if the cameras were removed. The result was that no motion was made to review compliance or hold a vote, and the petition was effectively dismissed without analysis.

City data and time-lapse photographs show that tickets were issued at times when children were not present — including during regular classroom hours and non-pickup periods. That undermines the stated purpose of the program, which was supposed to protect children walking near schools.

The key facts remain:

The city continued enforcement even when no children were present.
The ordinance intended school-zone enforcement to be limited and purpose-driven.
Residents deserve a transparent explanation based on data, not assumptions.

Thank you for standing up for fairness, transparency, and accountability in Edgewood. Your participation created a record that cannot be ignored, and I am continuing to press for a proper review and public explanation.  More on that later.

The November election is coming up, and something worth noting is that none of the council members on the ballot have any opposition. This means the people sitting on the council in the next few years are there only because they signed up for the job. If you’re frustrated with how they’ve handled the camera issue, leaving the ballot blank for those positions will say more than a checkbox ever could.

I will also be sending you an update on my assessment of the council meeting itself.
