The AVC courts being locked feels like a missed opportunity, especially for students like me who just want a safe place to try something new and stay active. It would mean a lot if the college opened them up again there’s not much to do in the AV as it is.
Access to recreational spaces should not be a luxury, it’s a necessity for a thriving, healthy community. The AVC tennis courts are already built and maintained, yet they sit unused when so many in the Antelope Valley are searching for safe and affordable ways to stay active. Unlocking these courts would be a meaningful step toward making wellness more accessible for everyone, especially when options are limited. I hope the college recognizes the potential impact this simple change could have on our community.
As someone who grew up in a community with limited recreational options, I understand how important it is to have safe, accessible spaces like the AVC tennis courts available to the public. Opening these courts would be a simple but powerful way to encourage fitness, foster community, and give people a place where they can feel safe while staying active.
As someone who grew up in the AV, I know how hard it can be to find safe, fun places to just be active and unwind especially in the summer. The AVC tennis courts were always a place that felt welcoming, and it’s frustrating to see them locked up when they could be such a great outlet for so many people. We need spaces like this open to the public. I really hope AVC reconsiders and gives the community access again!
Investing in community well-being doesn’t always require building something new sometimes it’s just about making better use of what we already have. Locking the AVC tennis courts when they use to be open for the public represents a missed opportunity to support youth development and further reduces barriers in helping the AV Natives stay active. Put these courts to good use and allow them to serve the community in which they were built in!
I love Portland Athletic Club! I’ve played here since I was 5 years old and it’s really important to me and my family, along with so many other people. Please keep it open!! 🎾
Tennis is known to be a ‘sport of a lifetime’, and for 15+ years at many of the Portland Public Parks I ran short tennis camp for youth from all backgrounds. Having Black tennis leaders in our Portland community help expand this fantastic sport and truth be told that the sport teaches many life lessons allowing them to grow up as positive role models and leaders in the community. Please save this club and its leadership!
I am the owners eldest granddaughter. I have worked at PAC on and off since I as 14. I want my grandfathers legacy to be remembered for who he was and what he has done for this community. The conservator should sell to a Family member or community member. We are prepared to fight for tennis, the legacy and the community here.
