The arboretum provided respite away from work pressures and modern life during my 34 years working at the U of M, and was enjoyed on many weekends as a family destination raising our children in Ann Arbor. There is no need to diminish or destroy the beauty and serenity of Nichols Arboretum to meet the university’s transportation objectives. Let's go beyond rejecting an elevated transit system that encroaches on the Nichols Arboretum and provide added protection for Nichols Arboretum from future intrusions, disruptions, and destruction.
I grew up near the arb. The Huron River and it's ecosystem went from polluted to being a healthy habitat. The cemetery nearby holds important Ann Arbor and World history . The plant life and fauna do not need intrusion.
The Arb is one place of Peace in A2
I have been going to the Arb since I was a child. Last year, during the ice storms, hundreds of trees were destroyed in the Arb and to suggest further damage by building a railroad is ludicrous. This is such a beautiful place and to tamper with it goes against everything I thought this town and university stand for. If we begin to chip away at it, I fear we have lost sight of what is truly special and important about this great land we live with.
The Arb is an incredible, singular natural space within an urban environment. I've lived in many places, and no other city I've been in has successfully preserved such a large, quiet, undeveloped space in the city center. It's a resource that really cannot be reclaimed once it is lost. I hope U-M makes the right choice to protect the Arb, benefitting its wild inhabitants and the students and community members who regularly visit to find some peace and quiet.
As a U of M alumni, I'm alarmed at this plan to disturb a critical nesting site for our native birds for a planned monorail. Please reconsider and choose a more conservation friendly route.
I visited the beautiful arb when my son was in graduate school a few years ago. As a psychiatrist, I know the loss of green spaces weakens humans’ mental health. Please preserve this healing space not only for the sake of the environment but for the thousands of humans who live nearby and visit.
As an alumna of the university I am shocked and saddened that President Ono and the regents would disrupt the beloved reserve of nature for our community.
