I have a bit of a different story from the usual person. As of 2025, FASFA has an option for provisional independence. This allows individuals to file without their parents' tax information. However, the requirements are sometimes absurd. Some states require the parent to be jailed in order for a child to qualify, while others require written statements from case workers or counselors. There's also the fact "provisionally independent" is the status given to individuals who are are independent under unusual circumstances (abusive/neglectful parents & domestic situations), to which many are unable to provide for themselves due to said circumstances. I'm someone who was in an abusive situation when they first applied for the FASFA, and was stuck in a situation where I 1) could not get out of the house—college dorms WERE my ticket out, and 2) could not fulfill the counselor requirements as school officers are mandated reporters. Because of that, I lost a 13k+ need based scholarship and struggle to procure enough to pay my tuition. I couldn't even use my family's tax information as its unsafe for me to talk to them. I filed my own taxes, worked, and was independent in every other way, I just couldn't afford a place to stay other than in a domestic situation. I definitely wasn't the first to find themselves caught in a situation like that, and won't be the last. FASFA's requirements and processes need to change.

I too have went through the strayer programs. I also feel used. The total cost after everything is way more than was expected. I feel like when it was discussed in registration they made it sound way better than it turned out. I do not feel anymore prepared to utilize the degree I did obtain from them. I have looked into jobs using my degree and many require knowledge of certain platforms or working medias that were never discussed. I am now in the repayment part of my loan with no reach outs from the school about any form of employment like they acted like they would help with. No reach outs in general. They weren’t particularly helpful when it came to classes. Most of the classes weren’t very helpful. It felt more like counseling classes and I was taking a business degree. I feel like they used celebrities to make their classes seem more important. Like queen Latifa “taught” one of my classes. Which basically just consisted of videos talking about how to believe in yourself. In short, Strayer is definitely questionable and I do not feel like 60000+ debt is worth it

I attended for marketing and could never find a job. I feel like the joke was on us after they took our money knowing that no employer would hire a graduate from this school. I paid thousands to return to school for a different career choice.

I attended this school and seen alot of weird things. I was struggling with one class. I was told to submit a statement, to be reinstated. It was 3 time failing. I just needed one more chance. I divulged my whole story. I had ended up becoming homeless in the middle if my 1st year. I slept outside during one term and still made it to class for my final and passed with a A+. These people straight denied. Where I seen people who failed and kept getting chance after chance. There's a lot of passive racism in Washington. It's never direct. It shows up in specific space. Health care, Academia, and Employment all the time. You just never know when it's gonna show up. I hope this petition goes through. They were very misleading. Just like corinthian colleges. And need to be held accountable for such accordingly.

I attended in Nashville. I was lied to. Now I'm in debt from student loans even though the school was cancelled.

I attended IADT Chicago back in the early 2000s. I started shortly after they changed their name from The International Academy of Merchandising & Design (IAMD). That should have been red flag #1. At first, the school seemed ok. Yes, I had to take out loans. I also ended up with 3 private loans. My mom supposedly co-signed the biggest of these 3. This is not true. Long story short, I specifically told IADT that I did not have anyone to cosign a private loan. Somehow, my moms name was added to the loan and they denied doing it. They claimed I did it. Since the school is now closed, we haven't been able to do anything about it. I have been struggling to pay these private loans since. Like so many others, I was never able to get a job in my field like they promised. I never made the amount of money they said I would be after graduating. I now have a ridiculous amount of loans, both federal and private, that I am still trying to pay off over 20 years later.
