How can one group of people reasonably be permitted to deny the cultural and genetic existence of another?
Shame on Memorial University for descending to such a lack of evidence-based decision making and trying to atone for its well-known ‘staffing error’ by ignoring the existence the Inuit of Southern Labrador.
I am a proud MUN alumni but I am a prouder NunatuKavut Inuit. My Indigenous heritage is NOT for MUN to determine. I am appalled and disgusted that this institution of higher learning is trying to erase me and my people. Consult with us. Don't listen to other people's opinions. Do your homework MUN. Do better. Be better.
I am a MUN Alumni who firmly believes that MUN does not have the right to determine who is Indigenous. Their place should be supporting their students and creating safeguards against false claim, NOT enforcing policies meant to exclude or isolate their students.
I believe indigenous peoples know if they are indigenous or not. Their DNA, their way of life, their ancestoral lineage tell their story. I am really surprised that a university can’t figure this out. If they are unable to determine who is or isn’t indigenous then who can? We don’t have a whole lot going for us if our university involves itself in such prejudice. I stand with Nunatukavut, we are Inuit.
I am not indigenous, but I have many students who are indigenous. It is my job to make sure their culture is celebrated and shared with all of my students. I can assure you the culture of all three indigenous group is alive and well in Labrador. We should be celebrating each group and not working to hold them back and marginalize them.
I am a MUN Alumni and find it absolutely reprehensible that MUN is trying to decide who is indigenous in our province. Where is the truth and reconciliation?
MUN has no right to decide an indigenous groups authenticity, especially given their poor track record in selected our universities previous president.
NCC members are not fake or pretendindian. Our ancestors have passed their genes to us. We are a legitimate collective of Southern Inuit and we are related to the Inuit of the north. Our indigenious culture did not die with our grandmothers, we have and still carry on our culture on the south Labrador coast. Just because others say not exist doesn’t make it so. We are real, we have always been here and we will never give up.
I have a daughter that’s attending Munn in Corner Brook, NL. She has her first year completed but has 5 more year’s until she is finished. The cost for this amount of university is extremely high so having help from the Nunatukavut group is absolutely needed!!!
To my knowledge I have no indigenous heritage. I did however spend 28 years in Labrador and saw the immense pride and connection to heritage and the land of all indigenous groups. I am also a MUN alumni and I firmly believe that the university has no right to be the arbiter of someone's indigeneity.
I am NunatuKavut Inuit, MUN alumni and will not stand by while my university , the people’s university, designs a policy with the sole intention to exclude me. Correct this injustice now!!!
