I’m a former public school teacher now preschool teacher. Both my kids went to public school and my daughter is in her dream college thanks to a Pell grant. I have also seem the importance of special Ed and all the things the department of Ed offers for that. Please reconsider taking the department of Ed away.
As a public school teacher who grew up in a low-income family, I am a testament to the benefits the Department of Education provides. Were it not for Federal financial aid, I would not have been able to afford my college education, and my life would've taken a much different trajectory. Also, thanks to IDEA, my older sister, who has cerebral palsy, was able to get the services and resources she needed to get an appropriate education. As an education professional, I know that our public education system needs improvement. However, free public education has been one of the factors that has made America great, so shouldn't we want to preserve it for future generations?
I was born with a rare disease and had a 504 plan in school. Even with that plan in place, my mother had to fight the school administration to get me the accommodations I needed. Doing away with the Department of Education means protections for disabled students, such as 504 and IDEA, will at best be enforced in a slapdash manner at the state level or at worst disappear entirely. Either way, it will be more difficult for disabled children to get the support they need. We owe it to them to do better!
As a public school ESL teacher, I care very much about all of our students. Funding from the U.S. Department of Education is necessary for Title I Schools, English as a Second Language, and essential services for our students with special needs and IEPs. Please support our students through public education. Thank you!
As a parent of 3 children labeled as special needs currently, removing or reallocating responsibilities of the dept of education is a travesty. The most vulnerable among us need our help and support. The Dept of Ed has a long trusted history of providing that support. If it goes away those kids won’t stand a chance. Please if you value the American people at all you would work to improve the already established dept of education instead of dismantling it and/or shifting it to HHS which will not know what it’s doing in these cases and make things worse.
If the dept of education gets removed we will all know that our leaders dont value eduction for low income students or special needs students. I don’t know if you’ve ever met special needs moms, but we fight for our kids. And we will keep the good fight going if we must. Because that’s what we do for our kids.
Keep Education available to all kids. Dont make it about wealth. I believe all the children deserve the chance to thrive and learn and someday contribute to the world!
My husband and I are educators, and if you gut the department of education, the most vulnerable of our students will be affected! The children with 504’s and the children with IEP‘s their Paras and teachers, school districts! Also children that only get food when they come to school will be impacted! Stop this dismantling! Start thinking of our children our children should come first
I have been a teacher for 34 years. I know the impact I have had on so many students and families. I have watched schools change as communities changed. The very foundation for the students I teach is their civil rights. I do not understand how taking away funding is helping schools and children. This agenda will hurt so many people.
As a teacher in a low income school, I see the benefits of the Department of Education. Title 1 funding provides resources and staffing my school would otherwise have no access to (e.g. extra support to help students learn to read). Furthermore, the department allows for students ‘ IEP needs to be fulfilled, ensuring that ALL students get the education they deserve.
