Petition updateMandate congress to remain in session until government shutdown is resolvedShutdown over and sadly democrats caved in

The government shutdown has officially ended — but not because Congress finally stood firm for the American people. It ended because eight Senate Democrats broke ranks and handed Speaker Mike Johnson the votes he needed. Instead of fighting for stronger border provisions, accountability, and real negotiation leverage, they chose to surrender at the finish line.

Here are the eight Democrats who voted with Republicans to push the bill through:

Sen. Dick Durbin (IL)
Sen. Angus King (ME)
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (NV)
Sen. Jacky Rosen (NV)
Sen. Maggie Hassan (NH)
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (NH)
Sen. John Fetterman (PA)
Sen. Tim Kaine (VA)

🧩

Their Justifications — And Why It’s Hypocrisy

Here’s what each of these senators publicly claimed as their reasoning — and why those explanations fall flat:

• Durbin: Said avoiding a shutdown was “too important” even without major concessions.

→ But this only rewards the same cycle of brinksmanship with zero accountability.

• King: Claimed the bill was “the responsible choice.”

→ Yet “responsible” shouldn’t mean backing down without securing the priorities they insisted were non-negotiable.

• Cortez Masto & Rosen: Said Nevadans would be harmed by a shutdown.

→ True — but Nevadans are also harmed when leaders negotiate from weakness and cave without pushing for real fixes.

• Hassan & Shaheen: Framed their vote as a “relief” to federal workers.

→ But relief without reform simply kicks the problem down the road and ensures this crisis repeats.

• Fetterman: Said he was “not going to punish workers” over political disagreements.

→ But refusing to stand firm allows the same broken system to punish workers every single time a shutdown fight appears.

• Kaine: Said compromise was necessary “to keep the lights on.”

→ Yet compromise doesn’t mean surrender — and this deal offered no meaningful gains to justify the cave-in.

⚠️

The Core Issue: They Collapsed Under Pressure

These senators talk about standing up for democracy, protecting workers, and fighting for American families. But when the moment came to hold the line, they stepped aside.

This is why this petition exists — because the American people are tired of the same tired cycle:

Threat of shutdown
Last-minute panic
Leaders fold
No reforms
No accountability
Repeat

Ending a shutdown by surrendering is not leadership — it’s avoidance.

📣

We Reached Our Goal — But the Fight Continues

The shutdown may be over, but the underlying problem remains:

Congress caves before securing real solutions.

Congress protects itself instead of the people.

Congress breaks its own promises the moment pressure rises.

This update is to let every supporter know:

We are watching.

We remember who stood firm — and who didn’t.

And we will keep demanding that Congress stays in session, fights for real solutions, and stops abandoning negotiations whenever things get tough.

The shutdown is over — but the accountability begins now.
