Removing the Aztec Warrior and stripping this school of a mascot is detrimental to the team, student base, and school as a whole. As an SDSU alumni it is embarrassing that this is even an issue. I’m sure the university staff were pleased when we made it to the final 4 and all 3 of the mascots were on proud display… and then an SDSU logo… with question after question of why don’t you have a mascot. Bring back the tradition and an actual mascot already.
Monty represented the spirit of San Diego State when I was a student in the 70s. As a proud alum since graduating in 1975, I wholeheartedly support the reinstatement of Monty.
I went to as many football games as I could and the beat memory i had was seeing the warrior run onto the field and how fierce he looked. Always dreamed of being one of the great warriors one day. Bring him home!
I'm a proud Aztec For Life, BA Political Science, Class of 1989. I finally got to go back and see the campus a month ago for the first time in likely over 20 years and it was great to see things that were then when I was a student while also seeing new things that I had never seen. Every major sports program in the country has a "mascot" and we don't. It was hugely embarrassing at the Final Four in 2023 when we didn't have a mascot. Bring the Warrior back!
The Aztecs Warrior is our mascot. He represents a nation that thrived in central Mexico for nearly 200 years. The Aztecs were a nation, had a capitol, a culture, excelled in engineering, and were great warriors. I am proud to be an Aztec and I see no problem with bringing Monty Montezuma back as our representative of such a great culture. -George Lewis
Outsiders who have no connection to the university or are simply getting paid by the university should not have a voice that is more weighted over alumni. Alumni, specifically those who contribute to San Diego State both monetarily and through volunteerism need to be heard and our voice is clear. Reinstate the Aztec Warrior immediately. Eventually, our patience (and contributions) will end.
Proud 1993 Alumni. Monty used to visit our student section at every football game, making the experience more enjoyable. Throwing the fire spear into the end zone got the crowd excited for the game. It is time for SDSU to stop trying to end traditions that so many love. Bring Monty back!
If it weren’t for schools like the University of Utah keeping the Utes as their mascot, how many people would even know about the tribe? Mascots like these don’t just represent history—they remind us of the very real presence and contributions of Indigenous peoples today. Why are we so quick to erase these connections to culture and heritage?
