These exact issues happened to my son a few weeks ago. Dealing with Skilled Trades Ontario has been an absolute nightmare, from waiting for supervisors to send emails that never arrive, to waiting on hold for hours on end just speak to STO representative only to be told that a supervisor has to return the call - which they never do, to writing a near impossible to finish exam on a useless server. Shame on STO, if there’s a problem, then pull this system out of production and fix the glitches rather than wasting apprentices’ time and money. He is now scheduled to re-write, using the same system, with no guarantee that he will have a less stressful experience. Why not go back to paper exams until such time that the new system is working properly. Where is the accountability? This has been brought forward to both Doug Ford’s office and the Ombudsman office only to be told that we have to wait for STO to get back to my son, which they never did. I am asking for others to call Doug Ford and the Ombudsman Offices to get some traction on this
I had written my electrical C of Q on April 29th and was unable to complete it because of technical issues. It would take between 2 to 3 minutes to load a single question and when the proctor tried to troubleshoot by restarting the computer, it completely locked me out of the test. I have spoken to a few coworkers who are having the exact same experience. Everyone I have talked to at STO have been unable to help and offer no information on what they are doing to fix this. I do not understand why they cannot have a backup paper copy of the test on site in case of technical issues.
I became licensed under the Ontario college of trades. I completed school, booked and wrote my exam on a scantron sheet and within a month I was licensed with no hiccups. All I hear about since switching to STO is horrors stories from apprentices about the run around they get. Is this the future of our skilled trades? The Ontario government is killing trades in Ontario.
My partner has been in the electrical trade for 6 years. He finally got the hours needed to write his CFQ and guess what. His eligibility came at the same time STO took over the exam and made it an online process. He went to write the exam, the questions wouldn't load, diagrams wouldn’t load, he had to guess on the questions to just continue forward, answers weren’t saved and the test booted him backwards and failed to save his progress. He ended up getting locked out due to a proctor rebooting his system. He was told 4/5 electricians are unable to write due these same issues. Let’s hold STO accountable and demand paper tests be brought back for anyone experiencing technical difficulties. A CFQ is easily one of the most stressful days of an apprentices career and STO is absolutely ruining the process for everyone involved. So much for Ontario desperately needing skilled trade workers …
Not only are there issues with STO administration of the exam, but now they also are having issues sending results. It has been several weeks. The call center claims they don't see anything about the test. The test centre said they have the results immediately and send it to STO. Several weeks later and my husband has not received his results after being promised within 2 weeks, then 3 weeks when 2 weeks passed. Now we are being told there is a communication issue between the testing centre and STO so it will be 30 days. When the results were available before he even left the testing centre. Absolutely ridiculous and they take 0 accountability and have no care. Yet for many in the trades, passing this test materially changes their pay and now that's being delayed.
For those who have studied for mouths, preped for years and struggled to schedule a test for themselves, just to be unable to take the test due to technical issues is simply unfair. These issues should be carefully addressed and taken care of, instead of being written off having claimed "there's nothing we can do about it." As this test determines the future of lots and many more to come.
After studying for months, and struggling to schedule my test, I finally went to write my test. I was the first one there, and everything seemed to be going well. However when I started my test and answered the first question, the next question wouldn’t load. At first it took about 45 seconds to load each question, but each time it took longer. On a timed test where I have about 2.5 minutes per question, one question taking over 7 minutes to load along with a related diagram is inexcusable. The workers there contacted STO to try to sort out the problem but the only answer given was if we don’t submit today, STO will help us reschedule our exams and wave the fee. It’s has not been almost 4 weeks since I first went to write. I have called STO several times, each time waiting on hold for a total of 6 or more hours. They keep telling me a supervisor will call me to sort out the situation but it hasn’t happened yet.
So after 2 unpaid days (one to study, one to write) 6 or more hours on hold during business hours while I’m suppose to be at work, and the lack of pay increase because I cannot be licensed, I am no closer to rewriting my exam. Nobody from STO has contacted me at any point.
To remove a working system and not have anything in place is just negligent, apprentice's have worked hard put up with low pay grueling hours to get there foot hold into an industry just to be told " sorry you had to keep waiting" is unjust and beyond unfair.
