I don’t understand the “bell to bell” phone policy. Some kids don’t have friends at lunch and just sit there and stare at their food? Like I’m sorry? Just because a student doesn’t want to learn and just sit on their phone doesn’t mean every student does. A lot of kids want to learn and it doesn’t matter if they have their phone or not. Last year we had no phone policy and I had straight A’s the entire year. That shows that just because I have my phone doesn’t mean I don’t pay attention. This year I’ve started to have a downfall. I don’t feel comfy with my phone in the “catty holder” I would rather have it on me. I have a severe medical condition and need my phone on me at all times and you guys are taking that away from us. Some kids don’t even have a phone and they get punished for it.this generation is going downhill because of you. You’re ruining it. Just because you guys didn’t grow up with phones doesn’t mean you should take them away from us. Be greatful with what you’ve got. Instead maybe take a chance on these kids and see how we like it. I like listening to music while I work because I focus better, but OH yeah my rights are taken away from that too! This is absolutely ridiculous to see how much you adult treat kids. Just because you guys had a childhood of no phones doesn’t mean kids have to aswell. As of my self, I have been given a phone for emergency purposes and to use in my free time. That’s what all kids are given. You guys blame everything on the phones and don’t think about kids mental health. You just care about how we dress and if our phones are out. I’m sorry but what happened to “how are you?” Or “ your doing amazing” but instead we just get “PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY” or “YOUR A BAD STUDENT” like I’m sorry but as a highschool student. absolutely NO kid should have to go through this. If this rule doesn’t change. I swear I hope you get fired from this position. It is the dumbest choice to think phones distract us. Some kids use their phones as an escape from reality from you adult constantly picking problems and causing scenes. It’s EMBARASSING how I’ve seen more adult become childish thst an actual child. Get your acts together and be a good person. Maybe treat a kid how you want to be treated instead of how you were treated. Like I’m sorry you grew up with something else, but you don’t have to take it away from us. Seriously be so honest it’s sad. It’s even worse knowing that some kids get bullied and they go sit and cry in the bathroom because they aren’t able to contact someone other than complete strangers that your supposed to automatically trust. I only trusted ONE teacher in my entire school life. It took me until SOPHOMORE YEAR to trust a adult. I’ve had to go phoneless all of this year sofar and I’ve had atleast 7 breakdowns just in December alone and couldn’t call my mom to have her help me calm down. It’s unfair how horribly we get treated. I hope your life is happy for treating us so badly. See how many kids die to suicide now ? It’s all blamed on our gosh damn phones when they do NOTHING. NOTHINGGG! What the hell is wrong with you people trying to make this world bad. I don’t care how you grew up, but it’s not how we want to. I hope you get fired one day. This is EMBARASSING. My opinions matter. Take it from a kids view. A MINOR.
Ms Denyse Carroll has been the most amazing leader for Robotics in PWCS. She inspires teachers and parents but most importantly she inspires students in the program. She leads with knowledge, and lots of encouragement and love. I’ve watched year after year as former students return as event volunteers, as parents, teachers and the business community also volunteer. We really need to do all we can to support this dynamo of a woman and the program she continues to grow for PWCS. A STEM building can do nothing but make the program better. Thanks Chance for getting this petition out!!
I was the coach at Freedom (Title 1) for two years before I hot sick and could no longer teach. In my first year, two teams placed and attended state robotics competition. Year two, we went to Technology Student Association Technosphere State competition and won second. All students in from team 881 both years are completing STEAM tracks at college or STEAM AP tracks in high school. All team members said robotics team was a unique experience not offered in any other part of the curriculum. Freedom could not have made it as a team without the help from Robotics Director Denyse Carrol and her attention to equity. Likewise, our small team could have been made even stronger if students had the ability to scrimmage at a robotics center and I, as a coach, could have been made a stronger coach with more centralized training sessions. Please support a centralized robotics center in mid-Prince William County.
I have been doing competitive robotics for roughly 5 years now and I can confirm that I have gained a lot from being in a robotics program. Speaking from experience from doing VEX in 8th grade on team 45784B and doing FRC since 9th grade on team 1885, has taught me leadership and teamwork skills. It has also helped me improve my knowledge on electrical, engineering, and business aspects as well as granting me time to give back to the community.
My daughters love science. A dedicated space for them to explore and excel at their STEM interest is a value added not only to their future, but to the community as a whole.
My son's experience in Woodbridge high school robotics and engineering programs helped him get his degree in marine engineering and naval architecture, become the first Presidential Scholar in PWCS history, and get his dream job as a naval architect. This is a hugely important program in our schools and deserves dedicated space and resources.
I am not convinced there are enough words that could possibly explain what Robotics means for my middle school team members. Our program is a home for so many who cannot find a place to fit in elsewhere and gives them a place to let their geeky passions thrive. A permanent building will allow us to provide that home to so many others.
Building robots for the two 1575 teams I was privileged to be a part of has easily been the most valuable educational experience of my entire life. Far and away more impactful than any STEM class I have ever taken, to include during college and my career. It directly led me to my career as a programmer and gave me my first experience working with other people to pursue a creative goal using engineering processes.
Making programs like this as accessible to as many students as possible will provide immense value to their lives and the world.
My children have thrived in the Vex Robotics and Seaperch programs. They’ve learned teamwork, leadership skills, and critical thinking skills. These programs have also nurtured their interests in engineering and they plan to continue to pursue engineering in college.
I have seen and experienced the good that programs do. They teach way more than what is written in any instructions. They teach critical thinking and troubleshooting skills and how to work with a team. All skills are needed in whatever field they decide to get into. I've seen these skills put to good use in the workforce than a lot of classes kids are required to take.
