I lost a good friend bc a police officer shot and killed him while he was having a mental health crisis. He was cutting his face with a knife and he lunged toward the police with the knife. He did not survive. He was only 21. He had his whole life ahead of him. He volunteered building houses for habitat for humanity. He was a bright young man who had a bright future ahead of him. He was in college. Cops do not know how to handle someone in crisis. They suffer but do not deserve to die! They just need a little help.
I am someone who greatly benefitted from my service with Americorps. Cutting this program will not save a fraction of the money we could bring in by actually making billionaires pay their share. I was paid $50 a week! Which went to food. But I earned scholarships which allowed me to avoid student loans completely. I worked hard, pouring literal blood sweat and tears into my work, but I gained the most by experiencing life in different parts of the country, like Inuit villages in the throws of poverty. Americorps is not waste or fraud, it is a true American experience, and I am certain the folks making these cuts could not hack it in the field doing the work that these VOLUNTEERS do!
Egregious. Infuriating bullshit. Americorps is a vital stepping stone for so many young people, involved in protecting the lands we recreate on, assists in schools and non-profit programs all over this country, combating wildfires, and helping communities in need during natural disasters. Amongst so many other important services they provide, I have first hand witnessed this program help save young people's lives, and provide life changing direction. The absolute short-sighted greed and stupidity of gutting Americorps will do nothing to Make America Great Again. I am beyond pissed off and you should be too. Please take the bare-minimum action of contacting your representatives in congress immediately.
The economic impact of AmeriCorps programs like RSVP are incredible. In my small southern Illinois county alone, RSVP volunteers give back $200,000 in volunteer service annually. Decreasing inefficiency with blanket dismissals and program dismantling places this financial burden back on the communities and organizations AmeriCorps serves.
I love near O Leno State Park , and as a volunteer there, I see what amazing projects Americare has completed . Upbeat and hard working folks and giving back to our country . Reinstate the funding NOW !
AmeriCorps has changed my life! I served in California, Utah, and New York, where I gained direct experience for a career in conservation. Everyday we worked as a team to complete a wide variety of conservation and education projects throughout the country. My time as an AmeriCorps member was one of the most fulfilling in my life. Losing AmeriCorps is a devastating loss to the country.
