Petition updateMP Spending Reform: Prioritise Public Welfare and Fiscal ResponsibilityWealthy MPs and Second Jobs—How Can They Cut Benefits for Those Struggling?

Fellow supporters,

As we push forward with our campaign to reform MP expenses and ensure public funds go where they’re most needed, we turn our attention to MPs with second jobs who are earning massive amounts while making decisions that harm vulnerable citizens.

Nigel Farage, MP for Clacton, continues to rake in an eye-watering £98,000 per month for his role as a presenter on GB News. While he works just 32 hours per month for the broadcaster, Farage also has the ability to claim taxpayer-funded expenses for a second home in London, despite potentially working there for his media role. This overlap raises questions about whether MPs are truly committed to their constituents or more focused on their lucrative second careers.

Another glaring example is Sir Geoffrey Cox, MP for Torridge and West Devon, who has earned a staggering £2.5 million as a lawyer since December 2019. With over 2,500 hours logged in legal work, it’s hard to imagine how he can fully serve his constituents. Shouldn’t MPs be dedicating their time to public service, rather than personal financial gain?

The Disconnect Between Wealthy MPs and Ordinary Citizens

It’s shocking to think that MPs earning millions from outside work are responsible for making decisions that cut benefits for the most vulnerable. How can they, with their lavish incomes, possibly understand the struggles of pensioners, the disabled, and working-class families? These are the people who face cuts to essentials like Winter Fuel Payments, while MPs enjoy a life of luxury funded by their second jobs and public expenses.

Our Demand for Reform:

End Second Jobs for MPs – MPs should focus on their primary role: serving the public. They should not have time-consuming, high-paying second jobs.

Greater Transparency and Accountability – MPs claiming second-home expenses while working in roles like media presenters in the same city must be scrutinized. This is an abuse of taxpayer money.

Redirect Funds to Those in Need – Money saved from ending second jobs and tightening expense rules should be directed to the vulnerable, such as pensioners and the disabled.

MPs like Farage and Cox are living in luxury, making decisions that impact the poorest in society. It’s time for change. Let’s ensure public funds are used for the public good, not to line the pockets of MPs with second jobs.
