Dear Supporters,

Today, MPs voted to cut Winter Fuel Payments for millions of pensioners, leaving many vulnerable citizens facing the impossible choice between heating their homes or putting food on the table. With energy prices still high, this decision will disproportionately impact those on the lowest incomes.

The Reality: Privilege for MPs, Hardship for Pensioners While pensioners are left to struggle, MPs continue to benefit from taxpayer-funded allowances, including energy bills for their second homes. In the 2022-2023 fiscal year, MPs claimed nearly £300,000 to cover the utilities for their second homes, a figure that has exceeded £1 million in the past four years. MPs outside London are allowed to claim expenses for these additional homes, further shielding them from the same cost-of-living crisis their constituents face.

On top of this, MPs currently earn a basic salary of £91,346, which increased by 5.5% in April 2024. Many MPs also have additional sources of income. Over 200 MPs receive external earnings, with some making hundreds of thousands of pounds annually through second and third jobs. For example, former Prime Minister Theresa May has earned over £2.8 million since leaving office, and other MPs, like Sir Geoffrey Cox and Boris Johnson, have earned millions from outside work.

What We’re Fighting For Our petition calls for an urgent reform of this unjust system, where MPs live in comfort while cutting essential support for those in need. We demand that savings from reforms to MP expenses be redirected to programs like the Winter Fuel Allowance, ensuring that the most vulnerable receive the help they deserve.
