Tower District is a vibrant, diverse, and creative community, and it deserves a library. I am a firm believer that libraries are more than just buildings with books. They are safe spaces where people of all ages can gather, learn, and grow.
I think that bringing a library to the Tower District means investing in literacy, access to resources, and a stronger community for generations to come, which is why I'm signing this petition.
Growing up in Riverside and utilizing public resources from all over the community, libraries are an incredible resource that made it possible for me to be the first in my family to finish college.
Moving an institution, like the library, into a privately funded operation serves NO benefit to the public and only seeks to enrich the owners.
We should all support our public institutions and push back on the rampant privatization occuring around us. Support your libraries and fight back what should be ours (the public's) right to knowledge within our community.
As an English teacher, I see firsthand how access to a variety of text resources and other media is instrumental to developing a critically minded and thoughtful world. Libraries are essential to this end!
I have worked in many libraries in several cities, including Boston, Pittsburgh, and Temecula. Temecula is my hometown and I have worked for LS&S twice in my career. Libraries are a public good and should never be run by private companies. The results are what you would expect: overworked and underpaid staff, redundant management, and reduced services to patrons. Whenever I tell my library colleagues about how I used to work in a library run by a private company, they are in shock that such a situation could ever exist. I believe the library would be much better off without LS&S. Please look to Santa Clarita as an example of how a library CAN leave the LS&S system and do better than ever.
Our libraries aren’t profit making organizations, but providing essential public benefits for all. Let’s make sure that our dedicated library staff are fairly compensated and given opportunities for career development! 💗
After working with privatized libraries in this area for almost 4 years, I can attest to the fact that privatization does not help library services and library workers. The Temecula Library deserves to be deprivatized!
