SO misguided that private schools are for the elite wealthy! Many many financially struggling parents are sending to private schools for many reasons, such as special needs or faith requirements; imposing this tax is simply discriminatory and will deny many people of their basic rights. In addition, this will burden the state system as well as the NHS CAMHS with the fallout.
As a former private school teacher, I saw first hand how some parents struggled to send their children to school. The state system is already struggling why add to the pressure.
My 2 children have an EHCP plans and we chose our school as the classes are small and they are comfortable there. We already scum and save to beable to afford the fees and this extra 20% is going to be a real struggle for us. The thought of unsettling my 2 children to move them to another school really worries me. They struggle with anxiety and other issues which will be triggered by such a massive change.
My son attended a special school in Berkhamstead. I would guess that 70% of the children didn't have an EHCP. Often, the parents were just grateful and relieved to have a place where their children were progressing and happy. They had often had an emotional and draining journey before they had found the school.
These vulnerable children haven't been placed here because they're privileged. Their school days may well be behind them before they can gain the safety net of an EHCP. Every day is important.
This policy is taxing vulnerable children's education.
I work in state and independent school and neither can take the hit of moving children. The state sector is on its knees but adding more children isn’t the answer, even if money increased- which I’m doubtful it would! The increase in funding would need to be significantly more than is currently allocated for each child to negate the negative impact of adding more children.
