Reassess the VAT on private schools

The Issue

My son is facing the prospect of private schooling because of the poor state of public schools in the UK. We are not wealthy, but the current educational landscape is penalizing families like ours. We contribute towards education through our National Insurance contributions, yet we do not receive any government assistance towards private school fees. This situation is financially daunting as the savings from government expenditure per child in public schools would significantly surpass the revenue generated from the VAT imposed on private schooling. The detrimental impact of this VAT on both the public and private education sectors is unfathomable, especially when funds are being misallocated elsewhere.

The UK government has broken its manifesto pledge, diverting essential resources away from public education. The situation has worsened to the point where there are fewer teachers in the publicly funded sector, leading to diminished educational quality. Alarming numbers of students are transitioning from privately funded to publicly funded schools, a trend that exceeds the government's worst-case scenarios. This shift is so severe that numerous private schools have been forced to shut their doors. Private institutions provide an invaluable service without detracting from the public sector, yet the current policies are undermining their viability.

The VAT on private schools needs urgent reevaluation. Not only does it place an undue burden on families seeking the best education for their children, but it also destabilizes the educational framework across the board. All children, irrespective of where they are schooled, are suffering due to this imbalance.

I urge the government to revisit their approach. Consider the wider implications of these financial policies on the future of our children. Private schools perform a crucial role and should not be penalized nor should families striving to afford quality education.

Please sign this petition to demand that the government reassess the VAT on private schools, ensuring a fairer, more balanced educational system for all children.
