My concern is the misleading of students. I know my GPA is true and that I am eligible for honors and I did pay towards this for the graduation packet of shirt, plaque and such, I am hoping they didn't just take my money of over $175 and not plan on delivering on the promises and benefits that were stated.
As a Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) member, I believe this petition is crucial because it calls for transparency and accountability from PTK Headquarters to ensure students are not misled about membership benefits or scholarship opportunities. Many students join PTK expecting significant advantages, only to face unclear policies and limited support, which can feel deceptive. Additionally, concerns about toxic bullying within PTK leadership must be addressed to protect the integrity of an organization meant to uplift and support scholars. A true honor society should foster an inclusive and ethical environment, not one where students feel exploited or silenced. Signing this petition is a step toward restoring trust, advocating for fair treatment, and ensuring PTK remains a positive force for student success.
It's frustrating to see individuals who haven’t earned it or put in the necessary effort benefiting from the program. I’ve never received a scholarship from PTK, and it’s disheartening to see someone who doesn’t truly deserve one get rewarded. Even though I received an award from PTK at my previous school, I still never had the opportunity to earn a scholarship. I truly believe that changes need to be made to restore PTK to its original mission—one that prioritizes excellence in education over connections or favoritism.
I was a PTK member two years ago, when I was a dual credit student. They claimed to have scholarship opportunities, which is what drew my mom and I in. Of course, I never got any scholarships. Instead, I’d just spent over $100 for a tassel and chords and bragging rights. I was within the top 10 of my high school class at the time, but I knew all too well I wasn’t in the top 10 in either of the colleges I’ve been at. Yet I still received email after email trying to get me to sign up for PTK, promising scholarships. Always some changing deadline, new scholarship, new something or another trying to get me to join. And mind you, I get these emails at least weekly. PTK has never benefitted me, and now it feels like they’re begging me to join again.
I am a college student who struggles financially. Knowing that PTK leaders are using money that could be used by students who are trying so hard, makes me upset. It hurts, because this world isn't fair.
I joined PTK in 2018, and was told the organization would make my goal of going to grad school more likely. As I later began applying to graduate programs, I had several institutions state that they did not see PTK as an academic organization because its selection process was not rigorous.
I was also told when I joined that membership would make me eligible for multiple scholarships that would help keep my higher education costs more affordable. This was very important to me, as I am a non-traditional, first-generation, student parent that was born into poverty.
However, I have not been considered for a single scholarship since I joined. I have not received any academic support. I have received no mentorship. PTK took excessively large membership fees from me on the promise of providing support and aid throughout my academic career, and I have gotten nothing but demands for unpaid labor and expectations that I recruit new members at every campus I set foot on. I feel like I'm in a multi-level marketing scheme. PTK has taken advantage of and broken promises to students, and has stolen our much-needed money, valuable time, and labor for the sole purpose of lining the pockets of the upper echelons of the organization. This is unacceptable in any organization, but is especially egregious in a higher education organization.
I signed up thinking that there were going to be scholarship opportunities (3.9/4.0 GPA) that I could qualify for. Instead, I spent money to be a member and did not get any of the benefits. Money that I could have spent otherwise to finance my education.
