Victories in Music Venue

This venue is socially and culturally significant and having seen similar issues occur at other venues (Old Red Lion, Angel) that MOTH envisage it's not a great leap to see how people who knowingly moved next to a licences premises will able to enact a complaints procedure that will nullify the significant benefits of the MOTH club. Those benefits are more broad ranging that at first appear. The Mayor of London has stated that the night time economy of the city is crucial to it's success. The venue is a hub for more than just one type of event and in order for all to thrive, they all must be allowed to succeed so that support is reciprocated. A vital part is the Forces & Services Club that meets there, (from which the venue takes its name) where those who manage mental and social health come to keep in touch and maintain a sense of belonging. Couple with the modern events held, the "Old Guard" interact with the new generation and bridge a chasm so easily exploited by those who wish to divide society. These plans will inevitably lead to a situation where the venue will suffer through no fault of it's own and by carrying out it's business as usual as it has done for decades.

moth club is such an important venue to the scene that even i - an american in new york - know of it’s value. london is home to one of the most bustling music scenes in the world and moth club is one of the most integral parts to cultivating the culture, and to see it’s closure would hurt not just the english arts, but the arts scene all around the world.

The impact this cultural hub of music brings to people is so much bigger than can explain. Confidence. Fashion. Art. More music. Better mental health. Moth club through its events brings all this and inspires so much more. So please. Let's not loose this important grass roots venue.

Cultural venues like the MOTH Club are in decline due to cost pressures and overdevelopment in the immediate vicinity resulting in more operational restrictions which ultimately make the business unviable. Venues like this should be cherished and protected as they are the incubators of new talent and also form an important part of Hackney’s nighttime economy.

My grandfather was an honorary member of the club having served in the merchant navy during WWII and the club was originally set up for servicemen. He was treated like the rest of the members of the MOTH club, and we, his family, were also welcomed there too. I have vivid memories of visiting the club as a child at various points, attending functions or meeting with my grandad with my father on a Sunday before the club would close for lunch and he would come to ours for Sunday dinner. The club was a vital part of my childhood and my family's history. When my grandad died, many members of the MOTH club came to his funeral, and they put up a plaque for him in the club. I hope it's still there. While I have moved away from London now, I still care that the club exists. It is an important part of the local culture and history. It being a venue that celebrates local community exemplifies the history of the East End. It has soul in a place that is gradually losing more and more of its soul. I am pleased that until now, the MOTH club has kept its tradition of being a hub to celebrate culture. That is very much why it existed in the first place. I hope that the club can survive the threat it faces, much like its original members once did, and continues to be the collective that it always has been. I'm looking forward to going back there the next time I am back home in the East End. As the MOTH club is part of Hackney's soul, the MOTH club is part of mine too.

I am one of the MOTH's of the MOTH Club (MOTH Club Member). We are still an old soldiers club of which we still hold regular meetings in our room in the upstairs of the club which out of bounds of the general public. The MOTHs have just spent nearly £7000.00 on its restoration with many priceless pieces on display. There are very few places veterans can meet and socialise in Hackney as the RBL shut down many years ago. The proposed development will lead to the closure of the club and close the club to old soldiers. There is no club like it in London and maybe unique in England. The developers are well known to be only interested in luxury apartments and they just care about making money at the expense of the community. I was born in Hackney, I can no lomger afford to live there, I am the last of generations to maintain a connection there, when I return to the Moth Club I connect with the heritage and sacrifice of the bougher and viberance of its creativity
