Currently I work for The Office of Latine Achivement and am directly collaborating with our latino students within MPS. I care so deeply about this issue not only because of my own ethnic background but because of my students as well. Latino students within the district rarely have a voice, to express their needs and desires for change within the schools. It's vital that they have tremendous support here at MPS, so I am signing today for them. For my family, my students, my community.
OLA has been a huge help to not just my Latine students, but even students from other cultural backgrounds. They are an essential part of our district!
Absolutely! It is not only a question of policy; protecting immigrant students is a fundamental human right. Like all students, these kids and teens deserve a secure and nurturing environment in which to learn and develop. For them to succeed academically and integrate into our communities, their well-being is essential.
I have worked very closely with our OLA colleagues for my two years here at MPS. They have been crucial in helping counselors better support, advocate for, build relationships with, and communicate with our ELL students. They are so valued in our building, where we have one of the largest proportion of Latino students in MPS. Frankly, I am appalled that there is a fight to KEEP funding to support such a vulnerable and underserved population of students, rather than a fight for MORE funding and services that are clearly needed. I fear that our students will greatly suffer as a result of these funding cuts.
OLA is such a valuable resource to Minneapolis Public Schools. OLA is at my site once a week -- they run specific focus groups with students helping them learn skills to succeed in school and manage their emotions. They are a safe space for students to feel seen, heard, and gain resources specifically for them. This is a time when we need to be devoting MORE resources to our communities not less.
Staff from OLA come out to our high school weekly to provide VERY valuable support to Latine students - academic, social/emotional, and cultural - which our students otherwise have barriers to accessing. Yes, language and cultural brokerage are very important roles they play, but it’s so much more than that. Students who work with OLA staff are seen and understood; they feel a sense of belonging to one another AND the larger community, and a price tag cannot be placed on this gift. As an MPS parent who also has students at a bilingual school, I see another dimension of OLA’s impact. Help us keep our local Latine communities strong by maintaining the budget for one of the LARGEST and most complex demographics of our district. We all do better when we all do better, right?
