I’m so very sorry for your loss. I also have an Uncle Jeff, and I can’t imagine the pain of losing him in such a tragic way.
I’m a mental health therapist, and while I don’t prescribe medications, I do regularly talk with my clients about the medications they’re taking—how they’re working, and whether they’re experiencing any side effects. You’re absolutely right that medication side effects! Side effects need to be taken seriously. Suicidal thoughts can be a side effect of certain medications, and it’s heartbreaking when that risk isn’t clearly understood or communicated.
I completely agree that people need more information—not just about individual medication side effects, but also about the potential interactions between multiple medications and the risks of overmedication. At the same time, I’ve learned that not every side effect can realistically be printed on a bottle label. For most drugs, there are simply too many potential side effects to list on a label, and the risks can vary from person to person. That’s why pharmacists, doctors, and patient education play such a critical role. I always encourage people to ask their pharmacist for a printed drug interaction and side effect sheet when filling a prescription and to bring up any changes—even ones that seem minor—to their doctor.
Medications can be lifesaving, but they can also be complex, especially as our bodies change or when multiple prescriptions are involved. Your petition shines an important light on an issue that affects so many families, and I hope it sparks better awareness, transparency, and care around prescribing practices. Thank you for sharing your uncle’s story.
I have Celiac and it has been so hard to get allergen information on medications. Most physicians tell you to ask the pharmacy, the pharmacy tells you to call the manufacturer, and the manufacturer just gives you a CYA statement that doesn't tell you anything. It is scary to take medicine not knowing if it will help or instead actually make you feel worse than before because it contains a hidden allergen. We require allergens to be listed on most foods, so shouldn't we require it for medications too? I hope this bill passes so people with allergens can determine what medications are safe for us.
I have always had a sensitivity to sucralose so I cut it out of my diet. It causes me to have headaches and stomach issues. I just started Xywav and it’s working for me which is amazing. However , it’s bittersweet because I am not sure if I can tolerate it long-term due to the side effects from the sucralose.
I have N1 and a sensitive gut. I'm finally on a dose of Xywav that allows me to not sleep regularly during the daytime without stimulant medications (it's taken almost 2 years to work up to this dose). but now I'm having some severe gut pains. I'm finally awake all day but now i'm in pain all day, over a non-essential ingredient of the thing that gets me functioning. I would much rather have a nasty tasting medicine than all this trouble. not to mention the cost of all the doctors visits trying to figure out why my stomach has been hurting so badly. please! I just want to live a relatively normal life with minimal side effects from the medication that makes me able bodied.
Diagnosed with IH in 2010 and prescribed Xyrem and stimulants. Been taking this combo successfully for 14 years. But my new insurance company as of 1/1/25 told me I had to switch to Xywav for IH. So I did, and have the worst flare up of colitis in years!! I am not supposed to consume Sucralose.
In my struggle with IH, I've found it very difficult to maintain good gut health over the years as I often don't have the energy to prepare fresh and healthy meals. I do my best these days to be healthier to maximize the energy I can get out of my body, and I feel that gut and brain health is really important for that. Xywav has been a life-changing treatment so far for me, and I'd happily drink a few bitter milliliters of liquid each night knowing that I'm getting the benefits of the medication without putting my gut and brain health on the line. We would love to have a sucralose-free option! Bitter is best!
