Mr. Sleek is one of the best math teachers I have ever known and shows his students that he enjoys his job and is not just there to teach. Anytime I am stuck on something I know I can go to Mr. Sleek for help and he will answer it. He has made myself become a better math student and help myself prepare for the future. Without him at Fort Frye not very many people could take his place because he’s not just a teacher he is also a friend that is there for you when you need help.
When I was first in Mr. Sleek’s classroom, I could immediately tell how much teaching matters to him. It is so obvious just how much he loves educating us students and making us more than confident in mathematics. He truly is the best math teacher and simply educator in general. Fort Frye would be doing such a major disservice to the students by forcing him out. Mr Sleek is such a huge part of that school and has been for generations. The younger students deserve a teacher as talented as him and someone who cares about their success as much as he does.
I’m honestly in total shock this is even in question. Mr. Sleek is so much more than a math position in a school. His passion for the students at Fort Frye is beyond measure. I always brag that I’m good at Math because of him and his wife. My senior year, Mr. Sleek told our AP Calculus class that if we were ever in need of help in college to call him. You know a lot of people always say “call me if you need help,” but how many actually mean it. The time came that my friends and I needed help and my first phone call was to Mr. Sleek. He immediately answered. He was there here for me and my friends (people he didn’t even know). His heart and soul are put into his students and alumni every day. Now that I work in a school district, I realize more schools need teachers like Mr. and Mrs. Sleek. Being a teacher is more than a job, it’s the frame work for our future. In order to create an environment in our schools where our students want to be there, teachers like Mr. Sleek are essential. He makes an impact on the students and the young teachers he mentors. Replacing him would be an epic failure to the students and the upcoming teachers as he is the staple of what this society needs to mend young minds. I am forever grateful for Mr. & Mrs. Sleek.
This is not the only time Starcher has made poor decisions within the Fort Frye district. Trying to shut down lower Salem elementary, which would force some students to go to Marietta or Caldwell district, was another instance. She is inept. Removing these teachers for younger teachers would be a mistake. I’m a graduate of Fort Frye, year 2010. I can almost all but assure you, if you ask former students about this move, it would be overwhelmingly and unanimously agreed on that removing these current teachers for younger teachers would be a mistake. Our community was shaped by these great people.
Mr. Sleek is a one-in-a-million educator. Just look at all of his students who have shared their stories of praise throughout his tenure at Fort Frye High School. He's a brilliant math teacher who strives to build character in his students on top of the mathematical foundations required for STEM jobs today. I urge the administration to renew Mr. Sleek's contract.
Mr. Sleek is more than a math teacher—he’s an educator who transforms what many students see as a challenging subject into something fun, accessible, and empowering. As a former student, I can personally attest to the incredible impact he has on his classes. I took every course I could with Mr. Sleek, and thanks to his exceptional teaching, I was able to test out of all collegiate-level math courses.
Mr. Sleek prepares his students for success far beyond the classroom. He not only teaches math but also builds confidence and fosters a genuine love of learning. His dedication, passion, and care for his students are unmatched.
It’s hard to imagine FFHS without a teacher of his caliber. I urge the administration to recognize the irreplaceable value he brings to our community and renew his contract. Let’s ensure future students have the same opportunity to learn and grow under his guidance.
I always joked to Mr. Sleek that I hated math, and while that may have a grain of truth to it, Mr. Sleek taught math in a way that helped me to understand it, and then explained it as many times and in as many different ways as he needed to to help it make sense. When I complained that “I’m never going to use this in the real world,” he created word problems for scenarios that might actually be applicable to me and my classmates. Mr. Sleek is the kind of teacher that inspires the next generation of teachers to choose teaching as a career path because of his dedication not just to the subject, but to helping each student succeed. He understands math (which is formidable in its own right). More importantly, he also understands students and how to motivate them to do their best. As a teacher now, I can attest that is no small feat. Mr. Sleek also expected a lot out of me. He did not let me slack or cut corners. I know balancing the books requires difficult decisions, and I don’t envy that position, but it would be a damn shame if the district cut corners by replacing Mr. Sleek. He is an irreplaceable asset to the Fort Frye community.
I have taken MANY math classes, both as a high schooler and as a college student in a STEM field, and the ONLY A I ever got in a math class has been with Mr. Sleek. I think that says a lot about what kind of teacher he is. He explained everything in great detail, helping me better understand each concept we learned. He was one of the only teachers who allowed you to just show up anytime he was free and he’d help you with whatever you need. It is hard to find teachers like that and I believe Fort Frye never will if they continue to go on the downward slope they keep walking.
