A change is required to the law regarding maternity leave for women who experience the unfathomable trauma of infant death.
Compassionate leave of a minimum of three months must be considered in this scenario, with the Federal government subsidising small businesses.
Thank you for highlighting this gap in legislation after the unimaginable has happened. Grief has its own timeline - but I’m fairly certain it’s not 4 weeks!
My husband died of cancer 25 days before our youngest was born, twelve and a half weeks after diagnosis. With a newborn, toddler and preschooler it was 18 months before I went back to work. The grief was still raw but at least I had had time to process it.
Thank you for highlighting this gap in legislation after the unimaginable has happened to you. Grief has its own harrowing timeline - but I’m fairly certain it’s not 4 weeks!
I was born 11.5 weeks premature (in 1973). It’s such a tragedy that this occurred. The treatment by her (the mother) employer, is disgraceful, and shows that to society (still) has a long way to go, when it comes to supporting our fellow humans, in times of grief, if not other circumstances.
My baby was tragically still born. Of course there is the grief from the loss of your baby, but you also need to physically recover from the pregnancy and birth. Cancelling maternity leave is inhumane.
Parental leave is not just to raise a newborn. It's about having time and space to deal with everything that comes with birth including the physical and emotional impacts which sadly for some families includes devastating loss. Absolutely wild to say 'no live baby? No leave for you'. The parent is still a parent.
No person should have to worry about money at a time like this. Emotionally, mentally and even physically this would be almost unbearable don't add worries to an already terrible situation. Help our mothers, we all have one so please, do better, protect the people you employ without them your business wouldn't be successful.
Cancelling maternity leave via text message is despicable, callous behaviour. I am so sorry for Priya’s mum and no woman should ever go through a situation like this.
What kind of monster forces a grieving mother to go straight back to work? Priya was born, maternity leave is owed, and bereavement leave on top of that. Don't let employers get away with being inhuman ghouls.
