Urge the South Australian and Federal Governments to subsidise IVF

Urge the South Australian and Federal Governments to subsidise IVF
The issue
Having faced the heartbreak of two ectopic pregnancies, I find myself faced with IVF as our only viable path to parenthood. Like so many others have experienced, this journey is fraught with emotional and financial burdens that could be lessened by offering subsidised IVF services, much like our neighbours in Queensland, Victoria and NSW have wisely chosen to do. I urge the South Australian state government and the federal government to recognise the significance of accessible reproductive services and to take immediate action to expand IVF services available under Medicare.
In South Australia, infertility affects many couples trying to make their dreams of a family come true. The high costs of IVF treatments often adds unbearable stress, making an already challenging journey even more daunting. Across Australia, states who subsidise these services have provided relief and greatly improved accessibility for many families, setting an exemplary model for all other states.
Tasmania is the most recent state considering implementing a similar model, highlighting the growing recognition nationwide that financial barriers should not stifle the dream of parenthood. By following Queensland’s, Victoria’s and NSW’s lead, we would ensure that those struggling with infertility in South Australia are given a fair chance to pursue their hopes of having a family without the added strain of overwhelming expenses.
Politically, supporting IVF makes sense. Having children drives both short-term economic activity and long-term population sustainability. It directly increases GST share, stimulates local spending and services, and builds the future workforce. For South Australia, which faces slower population growth than eastern states, each child adds real value, economically and socially, to its future.
It is critical that the federal government also steps in to expand IVF services under Medicare. This inclusion would embody fairness, empathy, and forward-thinking in reproductive health policy, allowing every Australian the possibility of achieving their dream of becoming parents, regardless of their financial situation.
An inclusive society is one that supports its members' dreams and ambitions, caring for them in times of need. It's time for South Australia to lead by example among other states on this front. By signing this petition, you are adding your voice to a cause that seeks to make parenthood dreams attainable for many who have no other option.
You may not have personally affected by this heartbreak but even if you have friends or loved ones who have been affected by this heartbreaking experience please join me in urging our governments to act swiftly, decisively, and with compassion.
