Ive seen firsthand the time and physical effort that goes into marching band. The hours, heat, sweat, weight of the equipment... That takes physical effort and skill. Plus the choreography of the performances? It's a sport. A team sport.
Every child deserves a fair chance to participate in extracurricular activities. Also most home schooled children are ones who were bullied in the first place and the school refused to do anything in the first place. I was a foster parent and not only experienced the way Trousdale school district treated those different or not so called home grown. Not only students, but also some let's say adults who treated kids differently. What I don't understand is why is home schooling any different from regular schooling they all have to take the same state test at the end of it all right. So I say let them try out and if they are good let them participate.
My two sons were part of the Greeneville High School marching band. Watching these kids practice and perform daily, both cadence marching and the formations of their competition shows were as physically demanding as a traditional sport and should be treated as such. Our oldest son was selected to and attended the United States Military Academy - West Point, in part because of both his learned leadership and the strenuous physical participation from 4 years of marching band. Please reconsider your classification of this high school extra curricular activity.
Marching band is hugely important to students who have trained and who want to perform. It teaches so many skills that both sports and the performing arts hone. Alaska has so few marching bands, that to restrict a student from participating due to calling it a “club” and not a team sport, is frankly ridiculous. This student doesn’t have any other options. If he wants to continue in marching band, drum corps, music, etc past high school, then marching band engagement in high school will go far towards allowing him to even apply for these programs. Please—let this dedicated young student perform and compete and do what he loves.
Going to BOA is an absolute privilege to go to, let alone, being in marching band. My band just went to BOA for the first time in our band's history, and it was an amazing experience to perform at one of these huge events.
I am a high school band director in Florida. I’ve seen students like Jaeden who will go above and beyond for the things they care about. Participation in marching band helps them actualize this drive, and turns them into leaders of whatever field they choose to pursue. The adults in his life should support those dreams, not shut them down. Jaeden, I wish you luck in your senior year.
Marching Band is one of the most unifying things in the world. Music is one of the only universal languages and to deny a kid the opportunity to express his love for music is disgraceful. the ability to go to BOA GNs as a high school in ALASKA is astonishing and every kid should in a marching band should have the opportunity to attend Grand Nationals. the community is with you, Jaeden!
I’ve watched these students rebuild this program from the ground up. They had little support and no one paid them any of the respect they deserved. You should see them now. They’ve worked harder than many people can fathom. This being ripped away from them, especially so suddenly, is one of the most unfair things I’ve witnessed thus far. This is not what their program or these people deserve. Please help us help them.
