Bring the Band Back!

Bring the Band Back!
The Issue
The band program at Western High School has been a staple of the community for decades. It is an extracurricular activity that many students have enjoyed and benefited from. However, in 2022, it was announced that the band would be placed on mini bleachers behind the goal post. This decision was made without any input from students or parents.
The band’s usual spot is the main stands. The main stands the heart of the band. It’s the time where band students can just let loose and preform without being concerned about whether a football will hit them. The time where they can feel school spirit and be part of it. Behind the goal post, we feel isolated from everyone. Everyone can see us but they can’t hear us like they can on the main stands.
When members of the band shared their thoughts with our proud principal Jimmy Arrojo, he didn’t even attempt to compromise. We offered to significantly condense the band so we wouldn’t take up as much space and he immediately declined. He showed total disregard for the safety, security, and mentality of the band, stating that he needs to keep the rest of the student body safe.
We’ve been told repeatedly by administration that the reason that we were moved behind the goal post is safety. They need more space on the stands for the fans and parents that come to support the team. It’s very unfortunate that we aren’t counted as fans when the band dedicates time to prepare to support the team. Not only this but from the last few minutes of the second quarter to the end of the game, there was more than enough space for the band.
If we lose this battle now the band will remain behind the goal post permanently. The joy of football games will be lost for us.
Please sign this petition if you agree with putting the band back in their original spot where they can be safe and heard! We need your help so we can show administration how important this is to us! Thank you so much!!
