The Houston Independent School District (HISD) topic page on Change.org addresses various issues and concerns within the largest public school district in Texas. Petitions under this topic highlight the need for adequate funding for schools, addressing racial disparities in education, and improving the quality of education for all students. Recent events may include campaigns to ensure schools are safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and calls for transparency from district officials.
Key petitions may focus on reducing class sizes, increasing resources for underfunded schools, and advocating for inclusive and equitable educational practices. I would like to start off by saying he is ruining our (students) chance for a good education . One, he is hiring uncertified teachers to teach; what are we going to learn from uncertified teachers ! Two, on school days that are supposed to be canceled he does otherwise; a couple of days ago the was a freeze . He cancelled school for one day after MLK day and sent an email and voice message to all teachers, students, parents and staff regarding school the next day because some kids didn't have "a hot meal or a warm place to stay in" . It turns out that some HISD schools had burst pipes and heaters were not working ! He LIED ! What's worse is he said and I quote "We made the decision to close schools today. (Jan 16) I’m not sure that was the best decision," Miles said during a district advisory council meeting. He also said and once again I quote "Despite the noise, despite the whining, despite people who are exaggerating saying we’re going to cost people’s lives, I got to ignore that and think about the kids and our core function," he also said "That doesn’t mean we’ll go to school when there’s a hurricane." I would like to point out that this was one of Houston's worst freezes in history (there was more than one bad freezes) . As if we did not have enough all HISD schools had NWEA testing the very next day ! It was the worst week ever because I could not focus on my tests all 3 (Algebra, ELAR, and Science) . I did not like going to school the next day not being able to focus on school because it was so cold. I have a couple of classes outside of the main building and each time went outside I was so cold I felt nauseous, I felt sick and I started to believe I was developing Acute insomnia which is not getting enough sleep due to anxiety . My ride was late and I was feeling terrible. I was sick, I had terrible pain in my lower stomach, and nausea . I do not blame my ride because I wasn't even supposed to be at school that day . If there were any children needing a hot meal or a warm place that is fine but the rest of us (95%) had a perfect place and needed rest, instead of going to school, getting sick and feeling terribly tired . Above all of that, one of my teachers (whom I will not name) told every one of us students he/she was not allowed to give us an "easy day" even though we spent 5 hours testing in a cold room all day . ( Reminder, there is only 7 hours in a school day ! ) Having said that the teacher handed out a 8 page assignment ! Even after that, I still had homework to complete ( they were IXLs which if you have an 80 and you get one question wrong... you end up with a 60 and having to complete 3-4 more questions CORRECTLY just to get back to the 80 ) I was exhausted and tired I live 30 minutes away from my school PLUS traffic; I fell asleep of how tired i was and all homework counted as at least 30 present of my grade . I have been going like this for this whole school year . Help students, especially teachers who are going through worst than any of the rest of us . Appreciate your teachers ! The are going through h**l . I have heard teachers are getting diseases and sickness due to stress, high anxiety levels, high blood pressure, high pulse and ect. Which are very deadly could lead to many more heart diseases ! ( Its real ! search it up ) Having said that I rest my case Mike Miles should not have this position of control in our lives. He said if HISD is not better or worse in two years they should fire him, it hasn't been one and he's already messing up the biggest school district in Houston ! He should not be here . Students are the future NOT robots, if you train the future to be like mike miles it would be over for everyone. Don't Mess With Texas . Right now he is messing with Texas . I researched my information from KHOU News Website and Google.
My little sister is in fifth grade. She adores her school, her teachers, everything about learning there— I want her to continue to have the same love for education so that she can grow up in a school that cares about her. As a high schooler I’m already seeing all the negative impacts that Mike Miles has made, and I’m terrified that my sister will have to be taught in the aftermath of it: a stressful, inefficient environment for a kid that loves learning at heart. Remove him so that she can keep the trust she puts in this district
