As a former employee of the original Caneel Bay, I witnessed firsthand the incredible and irrevocable impacts this resort had on the island, the local residents, the resort’s vacationers, and it’s daily visitors. Caneel and the amazing people who worked there set a completely different standard… one I have never seen matched anywhere on this earth - nor duplicated. Caneel enabled so much more than employment or a vacation destination, it breathed life into St. John and the residents…and it fostered community - a true community. Caneel also stood for things that no government then or today legitimately has any authority over. To ignore any of that and to refuse or block the proper rebuilding of Caneel is in a word, criminal. I fully support rebuilding Caneel exactly as it was originally constructed and in doing so now!

The experience in disconnecting was such a unique experience and allowed us to connect in ways we wouldn't have otherwise. I would love to be able to come back with our whole family to show them the magic of the property and the island.

There was nothing on the property that stole away the natural beauty of the land. Private, quiet, spectacular food and beaches. It often felt like we were the only one's there with what seemed like our own private beach outside our villa. The best snorkeling in my life ever was just steps outside the villa door. Such a shame if this one of kind spectacular resort is never seen again. It is exactly what the island of St John needs right now.

We have so many wonderful memories -- the beauty, the turtles and other gorgeous fish we experienced while snorkeling, and the wonderful ambience.

It was by far the most beautiful and breathtaking place I could have ever imagined exchanging our vows. I would love to go back and relive that moment and spend time surrounded by the warmth of the people, the grandeur of the resort, and the beauty of the grounds. It is truly magically.

Through the years I’ve returned at least five times, maybe more. My heart was broken after the hurricane took her but the worst was the inability of those in charge to restore this very special place. I have spent the years since then hoping to return but at my age and health issues it has now become impossible. So now it’s too late for me but not for others. My wish is that politics steps aside and this wonderful place is again rebuilt and made accessible to those who will undoubtedly fall in love with her too. I salute the efforts to bring her back. On several trips I’d visited with a wonderful man and dear friend of my aunt and uncle when they lived on St Croix, Noble Samuel. He was an important figure in the islands many years ago. I wonder what he’d think. Probably just shake his head.

And we would love to see EHI rebuild Caneel Bay to its formal state, better if they can. We have always wanted to take our two daughters back to show them how beautiful Caneel Bay is in the future.

At the time, St John had 2000 natives and 200 white people, the latter of whom had all the high paying jobs at Caneel Bay except for one dear native. The native islanders were meeting quietly to discuss how change this job situation on THEIR island. How nice that 60 years later this may actually occur.
