All equestrians and their 4 legged friends need all the help and protection we can get, my daughter an myself have been victims of verbal and threats with a vehicle, reversing at a high speed at us, unfortunately with more and more house's being built, we have no choice now but to unfortunately risk ours and our equine lives, to go out onto roads that are becoming increasingly dangerous, just to get to bridleways.

I have been taking my sisters young ponies out on the lanes in my village. The first time out a woman hit the more nervous pony because she didn't allow enough space and ignored my hand signals to slow down. She claimed to be horsey, then proceeded to blame me, even though she hit the pony with her car! She was going slow, so there was no damage, but the pony jumped onto a hedge that had a bank in so was stood with her hooves a foot about me! She did not offer to help, accused me of being the reason horse riders get a bad rep on the roads and didn't ask if the pony was okay! We now have a pony who is terrified of moving vehicles and were having to try driving vehicles in the field to help her, but it shouldn't be that way! She gave use a foot in space! That's 5 feet less than the amount recommended. She also could have waited at a layby, but kept coming. That was when I started using the slow down signal. She was going slow, or I'd have a dead pony, but I was trying to get her to slow down more as I knew the pony wouldn't like her that close! Second time out a car drove past the entrance to her field at speed and she was so scared she reared up. Incidentally, I was riding an elderly horse up to meet her with my mum leading the pony to see if the older horse being there would help her. It did not and we had to just put her back into the stable until she calmed down. I've been riding for 40 years. I've been training youngsters on and off for half of that and this is the first time I've had a pony hit! I am not investing in helmet cams to avoid being blamed, when I had been using all of the required signals I learned from my mum AND from the 2 riding road safety exams I have taken in my life. Either this needs to be made law for the safety of the animals who built our country, or the government need to start investing in a proper off road network for horses that are reserved for horses only, instead of being open to all users, as bridlepaths are. Making this law would be cheaper than a network, although we'd certainly prefer to not need to ever go on the roads.

I support this issue to make it law instead of guidance as drivers have stated that because it’s guidance in the Highway Code and not law, then they don’t have to adhere to it which is creating dangerous driving situations which could easily be avoided by causing less accidents with other road users, ie horses, bikes, pedestrians and taking the strain off the emergency services who have to deal with catastrophic accidents that could be well avoided .

In an age where tireless traffic dominates our roadways, it's imperative that we pave new paths—not just for the cars that whiz by, but for the two-wheeled riders and hoofed friends that add to the tapestry of our countryside. We must ensure that the routes we design embrace ALL members of our community. I am passionately committed to enhancing access. The exciting prospect of a new multi-user path stands before us, a ribbon of possibility that will weave together the villages of Layer de la Haye, Birch, Stanway and Peldon. This path will not only serve as a crucial link between our communities but also as a bridge that fosters connection, encouraging residents to thrive together in a safer, more welcoming environment. As we take this step towards a more integrated and inclusive approach to transportation, we are not just building a path; we are cultivating community ties and riding towards a brighter, safer and more sustainable future. Let us champion these changes together, for the benefit of all who roam the paths of our beautiful countryside.
