As a former female athlete who competed in high school and college athletics (1975 - 1981) towards the early years of Title IX, I know how important sports were to me in my early years. I am usually not one to support excessive celebrations, however, after watching the video, this was done off to the side and did not hinder any other events going on. It was more of a private celebration between Clara and her father. She was not in any other athlete's space and she was not disrespectful to any other athlete. I think a warning would have sufficed. After listening to her father's interview, I'm sure he would have respected a warning and it would not happen again. He seemed very respectful and level headed. To take away her state title was too over the top. I do not think think this decision was fair!!!
A student expressing joy and individuality through a small celebratory act is stripped of a hard-earned achievement?! In a world with far more pressing issues, punishing a young athlete for simply celebrating a win sends the wrong message about priorities, fairness, and what true unsportsmanlike conduct actually looks like.
The Punishment does not fit the Crime.
It takes a leap of logic to even suggest this girl did anything wrong. Who was harmed by her actions? Who is so afraid of a 16 year old girl and her supportive father that they rewrite history and take away an accomplishment? These sporting agencies actions show that they dont care about results or real people. They send destructive messages about success to young people and rob them of their joy in service to what? What does the CIF offer now that they have taken?
Clara, this will forever be a defining moment in your character. Hold your head high, stand tall. You are seen, you are loved, and you are heard. Don’t fight for Victory; Fight from it! You won the race! We all witnessed you crossing the finish line first. Use this defining moment in history to now walk like you are chosen. Even when the road feels uncertain, your presence, purpose, and resilience ARE making a difference—more than you realize. Keep showing up with that beautiful spirit of yours. One signature at a time is still progress,
As a CIF coach and former CIF athlete, I say shame on you CIF. The impact of competition on a student’s health—mental or physical should remain at the centerpiece of ALL decision making regarding young athletes. Unless you can provide written documentation that a rule exited prior to the race regarding celebration, protect the brand and integrity of the federation, reverse your decision, amend your rules and go forward. I was not offended by the celebration; I was rather surprised that Clara had been educated about the legacy of Maurice Green and sought to honor him.
