Penny Fields is a vital green space for the area, connecting neighbours from all around. With limited green spaces left we must encourage wildlife to thrive here, communities to bond here, and children to learn and play here. There are so many other unused areas - this would be a money-making scheme and nothing more.

Buildings run by organisations like this give others the freedom to express, its apart of our culture to support creativity…lets keep this building to support the present and future generations

The national glass centre is the physical embodiment of the over 1300 year old art of glass making in Sunderland and where glass making in the UK began. It’s history is entwined with nearby St Peter monastery where the first stained glass was used in Britain. Benedict Biscop founded St Peter’s and St Paul’s monasteries in 674AD when he brought over glass makers from France. How can it even be considered to dismantle the National Glass Centre which stands in the location of this incredible history and is integral to Sunderland proud Legacy of industry and craftsmanship.
Janette supported: Save glass blowing in the historic St Peter’s ward. Save the National glass centre.
As a parent, artist, and educator, visiting the National Glass Centre in Sunderland with my children was truly inspiring. Losing this space would be more than just the loss of a gallery - it would mean losing a bridge between past and future, between local heritage and global understanding. I’m originally from Japan, and visiting the Centre helped me learn so much about the rich history of this area. Let’s keep this treasure alive for the next generation.

The national glass centre brings joy to many people who visit. My father was a glass blower in the 1950's based at pyrex. Its nice to visit from time to time to see the tradition continue.

I graduated from Newark Woodwind Course in 1990 and have since worked in some of the best workshops in Germany and France. I've acted as consultant for a saxophone manufacturer in Taiwan and taught Woodwind Manufacture and Repair at the ITEMM, France's school of Instrument Technology. None of those positions, NONE of them, would have been open to me without my diploma from Newark. ALL of the people that employed me nodded silently at the mention of the 'Newark School', as it's known abroad. These courses enjoy acclaim and reverence far beyond our shores, and rightly so. But, it's "all about the money", isn't it? You can't run these courses like a business; they're an INVESTMENT for the future: No technicians - no instruments, no instruments - no music. To close these courses would be short-sighted in the extreme; the result of 'bean-counting', when no amount of 'beans' can replace such an institution.

The arts are so important, and we need those with the skills to create and maintain these beautiful, functional works of art for future musicians. How will we have another Albert Cooper if we don’t protect these institutions?

Luthiers are integral in supporting our culture of artisanal craftmenship, sustainability or repair versus replacement, and music. I have had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with newark graduates who are applying their skills and doing excellent work within our communities.

NSVM is a world renowned voice in the global community of instrument making. I made huge sacrifices to travel from Australia to study here, and wish others the same opportunity.
