Metaldehyde slug pellets are chemical pesticides that can be toxic to hedgehogs and other wildlife. Opposition to their use is based on concerns that these chemicals contribute to hedgehog mortality and pose a risk to their health and the health of other non-target animals.

There are concerns about the welfare of African Pygmy Hedgehogs related to their exploitation, often involving their treatment in captivity, unethical breeding practices, or the pet trade. These issues highlight the need for better protection and ethical standards for these animals.
