Save Vicarage Field, Brightlingsea, Colchester, Essex
The Issue
Nestled beside Vicarage Field, on Church Road in Brightlingsea, is a small but vital haven for endangered wildlife. As someone who runs a Hedgehog Rescue Centre adjacent to this field, I have firsthand knowledge of the thriving population of Western European hedgehogs that call this area home. These creatures, officially classified as Near Threatened globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and considered Vulnerable to extinction in Great Britain, depend on this green space for survival.
Vicarage Field is not just a patch of land; it is an essential ecological zone supporting a myriad of wildlife. Bats gracefully glide from the nearby church, Curlews meander in the adjacent fields, and the haunting calls of owls punctuate the night. The construction of 30 houses in this precious habitat would not only disrupt these established ecosystems but could potentially lead to a drastic decline in local biodiversity.
The loss of this green space would have catastrophic effects. The removal of hedgerows and trees would eliminate crucial shelter and food sources, leading to an inevitable collapse of the local hedgehog population. Additionally, these developments would disrupt flight paths and nesting sites for bats and birds alike, contributing to a broader environmental tragedy.
We advocate for alternative solutions that do not come at the cost of wildlife. There is scope for building in less ecologically sensitive areas around Brightlingsea, ensuring both human and wildlife communities can thrive without encroaching on each other.
We ask the District Council and Tendring Planning Officers to reconsider this developmental plan and prioritise the conservation of this critical habitat before irreversible damage is done. Let us preserve the natural heritage and support the biodiversity that makes Brightlingsea a remarkable place.
Please join us in urging the District Council and Tendring Planning Officers to protect Vicarage Field and its wildlife inhabitants by signing this petition. Let us stand for those who cannot speak for themselves and act before it is too late.
