🦔 British Hedgehogs at Risk: Cut Off and Isolated!

🦔 Hedgehogs Need Highways, Not Dead Ends!

New research reveals a worrying threat to Britain’s hedgehogs: genetic isolation.

Scientists studying hedgehogs in and around London found that some urban populations have lower genetic diversity and are becoming genetically isolated.

Why? Fragmented habitats and barriers that prevent hedgehogs from moving freely, finding mates and maintaining healthy populations.

A hedgehog-friendly garden is wonderful. But it’s no good if hedgehogs can’t get beyond the garden fence!

Here in North Norfolk, we watch June, Big Baby Hog and little Hoglet visiting our garden. But their survival depends on far more than the food and water we provide.

They need connected habitats, safe wildlife corridors and planning decisions that put nature first.

⚠️ We cannot keep carving up their habitats and expect hedgehogs to survive.

That’s why I’m campaigning for stronger legal protection under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, alongside meaningful action to reconnect their habitats.

Hedgehogs don’t recognise property boundaries. It’s time our conservation policies caught up!
