Harm reduction is a crucial topic that aims to minimize the negative consequences of drug use and other risky behaviors. It focuses on pragmatic strategies to support individuals struggling with addiction and promote safer practices. Recent trends show a growing recognition of harm reduction as an effective approach to public health issues.
Key issues and themes in petitions related to harm reduction include advocating for clean needle exchanges, access to overdose-reversal drugs, and decriminalization of drug possession. Notable petitions highlight the need for safe injection sites to prevent overdoses and reduce the spread of diseases like HIV. Others push for increased funding for harm reduction programs to support marginalized communities.
Join the movement to promote harm reduction strategies and support those in need. Your involvement can save lives and contribute to a more compassionate and effective approach to public health.
Being from the east coast and being familiar with universities there, I was shocked when I got to Butler and there was not any protective fencing on any buildings or parking structures. Doing this saves lives! Many other schools do this before loss of life - why shouldn’t we after it’s been a proven danger?
Unfortunately, this is not the first time we have lost a Butler student to suicide at the parking garage. Adding a barrier is a long overdue change since the very first time it happened. Doing so will be inexpensive for the university but extremely effective.
Newly installed safety nets along San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge reduced suicides there by 73 percent, according to a recent analysis in a study conducted to assess change before installation of the nets and after: https://bmjgroup.com/installing-safety-nets-on-golden-gate-bridge-linked-to-73-decline-in-suicides/
As an educator navigating this particularly difficult time for our country, we need increased mental health support, including trained crisis response as well as crisis prevention infrastructure such as this. Installing safety structures in the parking garage is one step towards crisis prevention.
As a Butler alumni who is a survivor of suicide, and as someone who used to contemplate suicide at this specific location—anti-suicidal infrastructure should have already been in place. Adding it now before another tragedy occurs is imperative.
I only met Sam a handful of times. He was always such a light in our club though and so passionate. He even commissioned an artist to design hoodies for us. He woukd teach anyone new how to play his favorite game and have fun with it too. As a future educator and as an alumni of Butler, I am deeply upset. This shouldn't have been allowed to happen. Sam did not receive the support he deserved and the garage is unsafe. I hope BU makes the right decision.
Things like this make me so sad that such a handsome and young man chose this over living. My cousin died by suicide at 17 40 years later his nephew died by suicide at 13 my uncle also died by suicide. It can take a once happy family to their knees. I didn’t know this young man but it is truly heartbreaking. My sincerest condolences to everyone affected by his passing. God has a plan, it’s not always clear what that plan is but you can bet Sam is being held by our lord almighty and no longer feels sad. I love each and every one of you and please be kind to one another for we never know what someone is going through, even when they are smiling and putting on a brave face it just might be for only you and not themselves. Take care.
Doing for others came naturally for Sam. He not only had a big heart, he had creative and fun ways to turn his ideas into action to help others. As a Butler parent, I did not personally know Sam well, but I did witness his caring nature firsthand. Adding fencing to the parking garage will be a tribute to his memory.
