When schools like Fabion are doing a great job for kids they shouldn't be closed. You can't keep the same good school culture by moving the teachers. Smaller schools help put students first and keep them invested. Smaller schools are also better for teachers and teacher retention is top priority for better student success.
I grew up in LISD schools. My very first one was Faubion Kinder-5th and LOVED it. That is one of my core memories is going to my first elementary. It's where I met my best friends, where I had all of my class parties, fun festivals on the weekends with my family and so many more memories. The list could go on and on. I work at Faubion and it brings back so many memories every day walking through those halls. Seeing where my old classrooms are, the stage in the gym that I walked across at 6 years old to graduate Kindergarten, the cafeteria I used to eat lunch in and the playscape that's still there that I used to play on. Please save our school.
Laura Bush Elementary School holds deep value for our community, and I strongly oppose its closure. LISD should seriously consider adopting a small school model rather than continuing the unsustainable cycle of closing existing schools only to open new ones later. This approach is short-sighted and disruptive. A mature community naturally experiences generational shifts, and it takes time for a new wave of children to enter the school system. Preserving neighborhood schools like Laura Bush Elementary is essential for long-term stability and community continuity.
Having had kids at LWBE for 9 years, I can speak to magic that happens at this elementary school. The special needs programs are top notch as well as the programs for quest, art, etc. Kids walk, bike or scooter to school and it’s a safe space for everyone to learn and grow. Closing this school which is pillar in our community to open new schools elsewhere makes no sense for “budget” purposes as proposed. How about we get rid of portable buildings and use the school for its intended purposes. If there is extra space then use that creatively to help with Leander needs. I’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised how our neighborhood will rally around and help you lead the way!
Faubion Elementary School means a lot to my family and many others in the area. Faubion and other small schools in the region are part of the foundation of our community.
My son just wrapped up his kinder year at a south elementary school - he loved it, we loved, 10/10 no notes. The idea of closing a school/displacing students to free up funding for newer schools far away is heartbreaking and I don't support it.
As a parent of a child who will start kindergarten at Laura Bush Elementary next school year, I’m heartbroken and frustrated by Leander ISD’s proposal to close existing schools while building new ones. We’ve looked forward to this milestone for years—and the idea that our community’s schools might be closed just as our family is stepping into them feels incredibly destabilizing.
I understand the need to address budget and growth challenges, but doing so by sacrificing one part of the district to serve another isn’t equity—it’s imbalance. Families in Steiner Ranch are proud of our schools and deeply invested in them. Closing them would not only disrupt our children’s education but also erode the strong sense of community that makes this area so special.
I urge Leander ISD to pause any school closures for the 2025–2026 school year and instead open the door to a collaborative, transparent conversation. There are innovative, community-supported alternatives—like piloting small school models—that can improve outcomes without tearing at the fabric of our neighborhoods.
There has to be a way forward that protects what makes our existing schools so valuable while still planning responsibly for the future.
LWB Elementary, tucked well into a neighborhood, is one of the best-performing elementaries in LISD. MANY students walk, bike, or scooter to & from school there, saving the district bussing costs. We urge you to neither close nor fully repurpose LWBE. Please consider keeping the 3 Steiner elementaries as smaller schools, and if necessary, repurpose a section of each for other district needs. Consider open enrollment and/or zoning shifts to keep all LISD schools open without having to close some in the south while building others in the north (where enrollment growth has not met expectations so expensive new schools are not needed at this time).
