I work for Miesville Fire Department which is a rural, all volunteer department with a very large service area. Because of my location, I'm vital to a lot of the areas in our service area, but a distance from the fire department. On most 911 calls, I respond via PV, especially medical calls. It would be a great help to allow the use of courtesy lights at minimum, but would be even better to be able to use flashing lights and a siren similar to the laws in Ohio. Would help me respond safer and quicker especially when life, property, and the environment is at risk to either size up the scene for oncoming emergency personal/vehicles or to begin immediate lifesaving medical care to patients in need.
I am a 911/Emergency Medical Dispatcher, who married my high school sweetheart who just so happens to be a Police Officer. We luckily got hired at the same department and it is incredibly eye-opening how our benefits differ purely because I am not considered a First Responder.
As an EMD we are the very first point of communication for those in emergencies. Certified EMDs must provide proof every two years of 24 hours (12 hours per certification year) of Continuing Dispatch Education. We provide medical aid before the EMTs arrive. We frequently separate and calm down individuals involved in conflicts, so Officers arrive at a safer scene. We provide critical life-saving information/instruction to both those calling and to Officers, Medics and Firefighters.
Even though we are not sacrificing ourselves physically, the mental anguish we endure is substantial and deserves recognition.
My daughter is a 911 dispatcher. She is the first person someone talks to in an emergency. They often have to calm down the person calling to obtain necessary information to dispatch necessary services. They are FIRST RESPONDERS!
