Victories in Euthanasia

It’s not too often homeless dogs get a chance to be loved. It’s even less often they are found by great people. Toothless doesn’t deserve an end based on what they never had, especially when a great person fights to give them everything they need, and have never had.

“ His owner, who was wearing headphones, immediately pulled him back and secured him to a pole. The woman had some visible marks on her arm, but Cooper did not bite her, nor did he show any signs of aggression. It was a moment of confusion—not an attack.” This is not reason for euthanasia. Please do right.

Cooper is not just a dog — he is our beloved family member. He is a 1-year-10-month-old Rottweiler whom I brought home at just 8 weeks old. Since then, we have poured our hearts into raising and training him. Cooper has completed puppy training, intermediate obedience, and has even been trained by a professional Rottweiler trainer. We also arranged one-on-one in-home sessions to make sure he was well socialized and well-behaved. His trainer described him as an exceptionally good dog. Every day, rain or shine, we walk him twice for at least 2 hours. He regularly visits the dog park and interacts positively with both dogs and people—children and adults alike. He has never attacked or hurt anyone, and in our neighborhood, he has always been known as a calm, friendly presence. Even when Animal Control came to take him away, he was quiet and cooperative, barking only when a stranger approached our home. As I walked him to the truck that day, he probably thought he was just going to another training session—not realizing he was being taken away for something he didn’t understand. That day was a tragic accident. A stranger approached me suddenly from behind, and Cooper instinctively reacted to protect me. He did not bite or attack—he simply barked and jumped, which unintentionally caused an elderly woman to fall. As a Rottweiler, he is naturally alert and protective—but he is not dangerous. Now he is being held in a kennel, isolated, with no visits and no time outside. Other than being given food and water, he has no stimulation or comfort. I don’t know how he is coping mentally. He is an indoor dog—loved, cared for, and emotionally bonded with us. The thought that he might face euthanasia after 10 days of isolation is unbearable. He can’t speak for himself. He doesn’t know what he did “wrong.” But we know his heart, his nature, and his history—and we are doing everything we can to stand up for him. Please help us save Cooper.

I'm writing with deep compassion and urgency to appeal the decision to euthanize a beloved dog who has recently been involved in an unfortunate incident that we believe has been misunderstood and misrepresented. Cooper—known by those who love and care for them as kind, loyal, and gentle—has never shown signs of aggression or malice. The incident in question was not a result of inherent danger or violent behavior, but rather a tragic misunderstanding that could happen to any animal under stress, fear, or confusion. Those close to the situation know this dog's true temperament and history, and they are heartbroken by the possibility that a single event could outweigh a lifetime of love and loyalty. I firmly believe that: The incident deserves further investigation with full transparency and consideration of all context. Rehabilitation, retraining, or relocation to a qualified handler or sanctuary is a far more compassionate and just response. This dog deserves a chance to live, grow, and continue being a source of joy—not be punished permanently for what may have been a one-time, circumstantial reaction. I understand the need for public safety and accountability, but I also believe in second chances, compassion, and justice that considers the whole story—not just a single moment. I respectfully urge the authorities, animal services, and decision-makers involved to reconsider the euthanasia order and allow for alternative solutions that prioritize safety without taking a life unjustly. Let this dog’s future reflect the compassion and fairness that all living beings deserve.

I am in the dog community and dog owner. My dog has training. Sometimes things happen. This is not a grave vicious attack or anything. This dog is not at all a dog that would even be considered to be destroyed or has shown actions supporting that. Its owners are very responsible from the start of owning the dog, that should be rewarded. This has really gone to extremes even the confinement, isolation of dog at Rancho (that environment is harmful to a dog) and these judges …….. this is as bad as the mistaken ID of Potato with the SBC shelter and they never made it right. Let’s hope Rancho and the Judge puts a stop to this and makes it right. This dog does not deserved to be destroyed! DESTROYED what a horrible and permanent word to end a beautiful life. One that is trained one that did nothing wrong a family member loved. Law abiding citizens that have gone above and beyond for their pup before any incident, that shows integrity. This should be dismissed without any further heartache on cooper or his family. For those of us well connected in the rescue world who save lives daily, this is absurd, this is where we usually start contacting channels 2 and the news and using our social platforms to shed light on what city officials are trying to do. This just reminds me of so many innocent, and how we need to rally together to speak up for them.

Each case should be thoroughly investigated and do not judge a dog based on his breed. Rotts are beautiful dogs and when trained like Cooper are excellent dogs and family members. If a human was spooked and tried to get away and accidentally knocked over someone, you wouldn’t give me the death penalty. He deserves the same compassion.

It is not fair to sentence an innocent dog to death over an accident. Cooper was on a leash and did not bite or physically attack anyone. Cooper's owners have taken full responsibility for the accident and have followed the laws regarding responsible dog ownership. The person who fell also needs to take responsibility for not paying attention to their surroundings. Their own distraction was partly to blame for the interaction that occurred. Accidents happen and this dog is apart of a family. As a pet parent myself, I feel that all responsible actions have been taken to remedy this and it is cruel to kill this beloved and well behaved family member due to a moment of confusion. I have tripped over my own pets countless times. It happens. Killing a dog for accidentally getting under foot of a stranger is outrageous. No one was seriously injured. Killing this dog will only traumatize the family and inflict more unnecessary suffering. As a resident of Rancho Cucamonga, I believe we need to do better. This dog is an innocent being. And I hope my elected representatives know that pets are beloved members of our families and community and they deserve our protection, too. The punishment must fit the crime. To euthanize Cooper is a gross and extreme punishment that nowhere near fits the accident he was involved in. He has already been taken from his family and forced to stay in animal control custody. I'm sure that experience has been confusing and scary for Cooper. Everyone knows how stressful and overwhelming animals feel when they are in a loud and cold shelter environment. He has served his time. Our shelter is overcrowded as it is. Let him go home. He had a family who loves him. Why ruin that?

This is so sad and unnecessary. Cooper saw that his owner was startled by someone coming up behind him. He only thought he was protecting his owner. It sounds like the owners have done EVERYTHING right to ensure Cooper was trained, loved and cared for and the neighbors have said what a good dog he is. Please please please reconsider or at least find another way, maybe additional training or something, anything but taking his precious life. He is being punished enough by being put in a cage with no contact from those who love him and he loves in return. That in itself is cruel enough. And please remember, he is not just a dog to this family, he is a living breathing and loving part of this family.

This is the craziest story I have ever heard. If a Chihuahua got scared and caused an elderly person to trip and possibly get hurt would they have taken the Chihuahua? I own both a Chihuahua and a Rottweiler and I will tell you that my Chihuahua is absolutely more aggressive than my Rottweiler. My girl is seven years old and came to live with us this past October. She was with her original owners since she was a puppy, but due to living circumstances, they couldn’t keep her any longer. She was not raised with my two senior little dogs but they all coexist. She is our third Rottweiler and none of my Rottie’s have ever been aggressive to anyone. I think if someone was going to harm me, she would protect me which I would expect her to. How can you threaten to euthanize a dog that has no bite history? I just don’t understand this at all. Cooper did nothing wrong. Anyone that is startled would react whether it be person or animal. This would be a travesty of this poor baby was euthanized. It’s inhumane keeping him created and not letting him out. You are mentally abusing this dog by keeping him in a kennel and not letting him have any social contact with his family. This poor baby is being abused and should be released to his family. He is still a baby at a year and a half. Please quit torturing him and release him to his family.
