I am signing this petition for myself & all of the other children who were bullied for being different. I am signing this because a derogatory term should never be allowed in a school (or a home) period. I am signing this because as a mother I would be horrified if my child used this word. I am signing this because the abuse & disrespect of little people has gone on for FAR TOO LONG with zero light being brought to it.
Dwarfism is a disability, these people aren’t mascots or entertainment for the able bodied. These are real people with real struggles, and they do not benefit from this mockery.
I do not personally know any little people, but when a disabled community (or any marginalized community for that matter) is telling you to STOP using a derogatory term/slur, you STOP. Period. No questions asked. Much less going on to use such an offensive mascot based on said slur and disability in a SCHOOL.
On behalf of my darling grandson, I signed the petition. I firmly believe use of the m word in a school’s official mascot is in violation of Section 504.
I want my grandson to grow up in a world where he sees everyone included and respected, no matter their learning difference or visual appearance.
My son has dwarfism and before he was born, we had no idea that “midget” was such a derogatory and harmful slur. If these mascots are continued to be used, it will signal to others as well that the m-word isn’t harmful and is ok to use. This is unacceptable. My son and others with dwarfism deserve respect and safety like anyone else.
My family has taught me to respect all people even if they are complete strangers. the fact that people laugh and point at people with disabilities instead of treating them like living breathing human beings makes me sick. As a person who has witnessed discrimination I gladly sign this petition.
So many of us are average size adults that have a child that was born a little person. Our children with dwarfism deserve respect and dignity just like any other person. End the use of this slur. If the little people tell us the M-word is a slur, we need to listen.
