I would like to start off by saying that I 100% support rehabilitation, shelters, helping those in need and the vulnerable people in our community. I have volunteered at shelters and food banks and I make sure to donate and give back when I am able to. Those who work the front lines of these jobs have a tremendous weight on their shoulders. It’s selfless, never ending work and is vital for the vulnerable people who call Sault Ste Marie their home.
That being said, I would like the community as a whole to reevaluate where and how we can make this space better located and/or better funded to help serve the homeless community in our city while considering our neighbouring families as well.
I hope by sharing and signing this petition that some awareness is brought to light in regards to the problems myself and neighbours are facing.
I’ve been on the phone with police countless times in the last few months due to the traffic that comes through my property. Most days I feel unsafe and uneasy on my own property and while walking in my neighbourhood.
I’ve suffered close to $1000 in damages to my vehicle windows (that I have yet been able to afford to repair).
I’ve had dangerous illegal drugs and others belongings left on my back porch/patio door where my child and dog play.
I have been picking up garbage, broken crack pipes and tinfoils used for dangerous drugs since before the snow melted.
Every single day there are dangerous people hanging around right outside my house, selling drugs and doing drugs in the middle of the day.
Why there isn’t security on and around this property enforcing the folks using the resource centre is very concerning… it has been left up to me and my neighbours to call the police and monitor our homes.
I’m sure relocating this operation isn’t an ideal solution for those who put their time and energy into getting it off the ground, but by sharing and signing, at least more people will be made aware that something needs to change in regards to the way the shelter is currently operating…

It seems that not enough consultation has happened with affected residents regarding this huge change to the character and dynamics of the neighbourhood.
