As an NYU alum, I am saddened by this institution’s willingness to punish a student who not only earned the right to be valedictorian, but gracefully used this platform to advocate for human rights . NYU is placing itself on the wrong side of history by denying a diploma in order to placate people who support genocide. It’s deeply disappointing, and calls into question the value of NYU degree. If it is simply something that can be taken away when you act with your conscience, tell the truth, and stand against violence, than why should anyone want it?
America has been the land of free speech. Universities should support academic freedom and free speech. Please award the student his diploma. You punish every graduate if you withhold a diploma because of words because we want to believe we have the right to speak out, even when sentiments are unpopular.
As a college student, I am ashamed to know that institutions are implementing such ridiculous acts of censorship. Higher education is supposed to encourage us to think critically and logistically about the world around us. It is not too political or biased to say that starvation should not be used as a war tactic. When we talk about the Palestinian genocide 30 years from now I will remember NYU’s participation and refusal to respect their own students.
As a descendents of slaves. Freedom means everything. This individual should be able to Vice his opinion. An opinion that most Americans have when atrocities are before our very eyes. The individual should be heralded for seaking up and out voicing non harmful opinion is the American way. He spoke truth, in seeking recognition for those who cannot speak for themselves.
As a 1984 Tisch Alum, whose Uncle and Grandfather, the later an 1929 Alum, I am saddened to see this action by NYU. This is not how an institution of higher education should treat its students and grads.
Being a Jew, have no love for the Palestinians whatsoever. They have been making bad choices for 70 years.
But as an American, I stand for freedom of speech, even though I oppose what is being voiced.
NYU… Release the Diploma, you are only diminishing our University.
This is censorship at it's worst. Whether one agrees with Logan Rozo or not, denying him his diploma - which he earned - for saying what every respected humanitarian organization has proclaimed and our allies believe - is anti- democratic and a violation of free speech, another shameful capitulation to the Trump administration's efforts to repress dissent and create fear. Are we really going to hand over our rights so easily?
The audacity to take a way a hard working and PAYING student’s certification of achievement simply for mentioning the reality of violence in our world, a reality that the institution wishes to sweep under the rug and dismiss, is outrageous.
To see a young person speak so courageously about the horror we’ve all been witnessing in Gaza and then to be punished for it is absolutely outrageous.
You cannot take away this young man’s diploma simply for using his right to free speech. NYU should stand up for its students and be proud that they use their voices to fight injustice. You are participating in censorship and that will NOT be forgotten
