The G&B school was a gift to the people of Georgetown and entrusted by the G&B company to the Town of Wilton after Town representatives promised that the original 1916 covenant giving the people rights to use the building as a community center would continue to be upheld. The long and short of it is that historical records support the case that this is not a building Wilton should be able to sell to just anyone for profit. It is a building that the people of Georgetown (and also greater Wilton, Redding, Weston, and Ridgefield, as all of these form part of Georgetown) have rights to. If the Town of Wilton no longer wants to maintain the building (and they have left a lot of things unmaintained, so this would seem to be a fair interpretation), fine. Then give it to the GCA. But it is not right (and I hope a judge would determine it illegal, too) to violate the covenants, deny Georgetowners their inheritance, and to sell the place for profit (when Wilton never paid the G&B company a dime for the deed in the first place). What buyer would respect the peoples' right to use the school as a community center? The covenants say that so long as it doesn't interfere with the building's functions as a school (and it no longer functions as a school), it is to be available to the community. That is 100% of the time now. And on top of that the fields are used for local sports by children from throughout Wilton.
The G&B school must remain with the community. It is the heart of Georegtown and has been underutilized and neglected as a community resource for far too long. Using it for commercial development will destroy our neighborhood. Keep the G&B in the hands of the community.
My son played soccer on the fields
My daughter made art in the center
My support group shared and cried in the meeting room.
It’s a gem that could shine like star if people value a landmark of tradition and heritage.
My grandmother went to this school in the 1920's, and I went to summer camp here when I was a kid. It's a beautiful building and a great resource for people of the area, and helps anchor the neighborhood. It deserves not to be sold and destroyed!
Detroit should stand by an organization with such a legacy of service and a community-based, by-residents-for-residents approach that improves lives. Decisions about what is good for business shouldn't come at the cost of what is good for people.
