Working for Nightline when I was a Barnard student absolutely changed my life. All the skills I learned through my work on the lines and in leadership impacted my personal life and career greatly. Barnard students really utilize this service, and I know it is a comfort for them to have as a resource. I was a Director and know how deeply the student leadership works with and trusts the Barnard and Columbia admin they work with. Please let them continue this important and extraordinary and selfless work.
BC’25. Nightline is a vital mental health resource. In times as turbulent as these, Barnard students deserve access to an anonymous, peer listening service. We've taken calls from students who felt they had nowhere else to turn—everyone in distress deserves the chance to reach out and be heard.
I am an alumnus of Columbia College Class of 2023 and a former listener for Nightline. I implore you: please, let public safety come first, and every other consideration follow. Whatever factors you weigh, let this be the first and the last: Nightline saves lives. As with any organization built to avert catastrophe, successful outcomes are often invisible; you won’t see what didn’t happen. But this is just the point. Nightline, more than anything, represents a first line of defense to protect the health and lives of those under your watch. It must be allowed to fulfill that function.
GS’25. Nightline is an essential service not just because it acts on serious crises, but precisely because it also provides support for non-serious issues. Concerns like academics, relationships, job prospects, friendships, adjustment to college etc could be viewed as trivial, but by allowing a space for people to talk to a peer, Nightline helps it not spiral into a bigger mental health issue. Not every Barnard student will use it, but for those who do, it is a essential service only Nightline provides!
GS '22. Nightline has been a vital resource for the Columbia-Barnard community for years. Through everyday challenges and community tragedies, peer listeners have always been available to support everyone in the community, which includes Barnard students. As a listener, I heard students from all undergraduate schools voice their challenges and came to understand the need for additional support and resources - not less.
BC'20 and Nightline alum. It is of vital importance that Barnard reinstate Nightline access for Barnard students. As a former peer listener, I personally spoke with many students over my four years in the organization who credit Nightline with getting them through to another day. Barnard students deserve access to this resource as much as Columbia students do. My involvement with Nightline completely changed my life for the better, and it would be heartbreaking if other Nighline students were to not have this same opportunity.
I’m a Nightline alum who graduated in 2013, it was one of the most impactful experiences I had in college. And I know hundreds of students received extremely needed support from nightline just in my time there. I’m horrified to hear that Nightline has been shut down. Especially at schools like Barnard and Columbia, having a phone line you can call with your peers brings campus together and makes it feel more like a community. Bring Nightline back!
BC '16. Serving my fellow students by volunteering for Nightline was the most impactful and meaningful experience of my time at Barnard. The empathy and skills I gained at Nightline have followed me throughout my life and career.
BC '14 and Nightline alum. My time on Nightline taught me invaluable skills and helped me build relationships that last to this day. It also set me on a course to pursue my Masters in Social Work and current career. Thinking back to the countless phone calls I took in the middle of the night - every student should have access to a sympathetic voice when they need it.
