Academic freedom is a critical topic that encompasses the rights of scholars, researchers, and educators to explore and discuss ideas without fear of censorship or retaliation. Recent trends have shown an increase in challenges to academic freedom, including censorship, political interference, and restrictions on research topics.
Petitions under this topic highlight the importance of protecting academic freedom and advocating for the autonomy of educational institutions. One petition with thousands of signatures calls for the release of imprisoned scholars who are facing persecution for their research and activism. Another petition addresses the issue of funding cuts to universities that limit academic freedom and hinder the pursuit of knowledge.
Join the movement to defend academic freedom by exploring and supporting these petitions. Your involvement can help safeguard intellectual inquiry, promote diverse perspectives, and uphold the principles of higher education in societies around the world.
I fully support this petition demanding justice for Dr. Maltsev. It is deeply concerning when cases of malicious prosecution arise, as they undermine trust in the legal system and can irreparably harm innocent individuals. A thorough and transparent investigation is critical to ensure accountability and restore faith in due process. No one should have to endure such unjust treatment. Let’s stand together for truth and justice!
Dear Dr. Maltsev,
As an American woman working within the educational system, I want to send you my heartfelt support and admiration. Your courage, intellect, and unrelenting pursuit of truth stand as a powerful example not only for your country but for the global scientific and academic community.
It is deeply troubling—and frankly, infuriating—to witness how law enforcement systems can be misused to silence voices of reason, research, and reform. The targeting of a scientist for their work or beliefs is an affront to every principle we hold dear in education, in democracy, and in human decency. Such abuses of power strike at the very heart of what it means to seek truth and advance society.
Despite these injustices, I hold hope in the strength and integrity of the judicial system to ultimately recognize and correct these wrongs. Justice, though sometimes delayed, must prevail—and I believe it will. Your dignity in the face of adversity is a testament to that truth.
Please know that you are not alone. Educators, scholars, and thinkers around the world stand with you. Your voice matters, your work matters, and your resilience inspires us all.
I have been following the case of Dr. Oleg Maltsev with growing unease. I am not a scientist. I am not part of Dr. Maltsev’s professional circle. But one does not need a degree in jurisprudence to recognize that what is happening here reflects a deeper illness. The state cannot criminalize intellectual inquiry and still pretend to champion democratic values.
Dr. Maltsev is not accused of acts of violence. He is not suspected of espionage, sabotage or conspiracy in any conventional sense. What he is guilty of, it seems, is having an independent voice, an analytical mind, and a body of work that does not conform to convenient narratives. These are not crimes. These are the very attributes that any thinking society should protect and respect.
There is still time to turn back. To show that Ukraine, even under enormous strain, does not confuse criticism with disloyalty!!!
I saw how much DeSantis is trying to overtake educational insitutions to spread more right-wing propaganda, censoring important sources of material and discouraging speech as long as it doesn't echo the tune of his own political views. FAU needs to fight back before any more damage is done.
It is apparent that many of these conservative politicians with no real credentials taking over universities want to erase any literature that does not fit the disturbing agenda that Trump and by extension Desantis tells them to follow for their own promised financial or political gain. It began with new college of Florida with books on sexuality, gender orientation, race, women's rights, and religious studies being thrown into dumpsters and this university that is being taken over as well will likely meet a similar fate. Young people need to learn the true and often times dark history on these subjects and be free to be their authentic selves or we are all doomed to repeat that history. As a transgender person in my 20’s I especially fear for any and all students that are part of the lgbt+ community if Adam Hasner takes over FAU.
University is about exploring your interests throughout the various classes you take and organizations you join. So I don't get why we're trying to swing the politicalness of an inherently neutral place. I'm a student at WHC, and I don't want this guy!!! I'm a minority and I worry about my place at this school with the takes he has shown in the past :((
Maguire village was an integral part of my experience as a single mom and full time student at UF. It was affordable and convenient, but also very enriching. The multi cultural community there changed our lives in a beautiful way. The experience of living at Maguire was unique and irreplaceable.
