PLT completely transformed my high school experience. The extra one-on-one time with teachers gave me the support I needed to truly understand subjects like math and English. It wasn’t just about raising my grades—it gave me the time and space to really learn. There’s no other system that compares. Taking PLT away would be a huge step backward for students in the RETSD district.

PLT helps me manage my time, schoolwork like group projects, missed assignments, and help from teachers. Removing PLT can be distressing to students mental health as highschool can be challenging with all of these assignments. Doesn’t the school board advocate for mental health and using school resources? PLT is a school recourse that is incredibly helpful and beneficial to Richmond youth.

Teenagers are expected to complete assignments for 8 courses all while doing volunteer and extracurriculars for some of us, and lets not mention that one teacher that leaves the most insane amount of hw as if that class is the only class we do. Plt gives us time to catch up for our PERSONAL learning since everyone lives a different life. With a rigid plt system that forces us to get up so early, it can really damage our mental heakth if we dont have that extra hour of sleep. For some people, they use plt for their own sake and limiting it to a certain classroom does NOT benefit anyone’s personal needs needed to succeed un their learning journey 🙏

PLT has made my life at school more profound with real time conversations with teachers/peers and true bonding.

I think PLT should be first block, maybe a little bit longer because it’s PERSONAL LEARNING TIME and it doesn’t matter if people are using that time to study or sleep in. Multiple studies have shown adolescents perform better later in the day anyways, yet high school starts earlier than elementary. I think students have every right to get extra sleep in. Many people including me look forward to plt days, and I feel more productive because I know the class is shorter (im not dreading 80 mins of class) but if they change plt to second block/other changes, idk what’s gonna get me through high school bc plt is honestly such a refreshing break, no matter if im hanging with my friends in the library or spending time with my family. The bell schedule that they are planning is such an inconvenience for students, staff and parents alike. It’s not considerate to people who have learning disabilities/poor memory. Enforcing people to be on time at 8:25 (bc class STARTS at 8:30) everyday 5 days straight will stress not only students but the parents too. Richmond is already known for frequent driving accidents and this decision will only make it worse. You cannot expect everyone to walk bc many of us do not live close to our schools. My parents don’t even let me bike to school bc they know how dangerous busy roads are. The traffic this will create is also impacting the people who live by school environments, because they won’t be able to get to work with the jams happening every day. We’re also forgetting teachers, who honestly do so much and most of them are underpaid. They need plt as much as we do, to mark tests/hw to help students with questions have students come in for test/retest mental health break to plan what to teach students Plt was never an inconvenience to anyone and it honestly hurts to hear they changed it without listening to the students. I speak for people who will be impacted by this decision, current students and teachers, future students and teachers, people who do not have social media, parents who benefit from plt and don’t have to rush. I hope whoever is in charge of finalizing these decisions will have us in mind next time.

Hello everyone. As a SD38, student I want to keep PLT because of several factors. First, I have a lot of extracurricular activities, so PLT is valuable time to do and catch-up on homework. Second, everyone has questions they may not be comfortable or didn't ask during class-time. PLT is a great time to ask teachers some questions you have. So teachers can explain it to you and because of PLT being 55 minutes, the teacher will explain it to you in detail. Lastly, PLT is a great time to catch up on missed tests or assignments you can only do in school (not allowed to bring home). I think everyone has been sick and it's not a great experience that you have to come to school only for a test. And some assignments teachers don't let you bring home, so you have to do it in class or at school. So PLT is a great time to enhance or catch up on learning.

Eliminating Personalized Learning Time (PLT) in School District 38 would be a disaster for my learning and many other students. PLT isn't optional it's essential for catching up, exploring interests, getting help from teachers, and managing assignments. Without it, my learning would be ruined, leading to more stress, less support, and a huge hit to our ability to learn effectively. Please don't take it away!

As a student in RHS, I strongly support this petition. Even if we are not in our class doing classwork during PLT, that does not mean PLT is not helpful for us. Our current PLT allows us to obtain support from sources outside of our school/class, use resources we can't access at school, or simply do the same thing in a more comfortable environment. The removal, shortening, or re-timing of PLT could stop us from improving our learning via the methods listed earlier.

The district needs to understand that by shortening or altering our PLT schedule, they will be negatively affecting the lives of their students. The introduction of PLT showed that the district truly cared about the learning of their students, and allowed them to seek the extra help they needed. Shortening or moving this is a step in the wrong direction. To me, it seems as if they’ve decided they no longer care about their students’ learning. A short PLT does not do what it aims to accomplish; it reduces the amount of time we can seek help for, grasp concepts, and seek other teachers. Signing up for specific teachers limits our connections and having the option of varying learning techniques. It would be best for all students in the district if it were standardized to 60 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays (like what is currently happening at McMath). This schedule makes sense and is successful. As the district’s motto says, “the focus is on the learner,” so hopefully they can live up to it and listen to their students.
